Government seizure of privately held military firearms to be decided within the next three days.

(Tuesday, October 16, 2001) -- Two senators and two congressmen will decide within the next three days whether the government will be able to seize your military firearms by paying you the purchase price.

Section 1062 of the Senate version of the DOD authorization bill is now being "pre-conferenced" by the House and Senate Chairmen and Ranking Members of the Armed Services Committees: House Chairman Bob Stump, House Ranking Member Ike Skelton, Senate Chairman Carl Levin, and Senate Ranking Member John Warner.

If section 1062 is retained, the government will be authorized to order you to turn in your government-surplus firearms for "demilitarization."

This means the Department of Defense can collect and destroy privately owned militaria -- including your M1 Carbine, 1903 Springfield, Colt SAA, uniforms, ammo, scopes, and more. If the government determines, at its discretion, that "demilitarization" is not practical, it could keep the firearms (or uniforms, etc.) by paying you the purchase price.

ACTION: Please direct your comments to Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO). As the Ranking Minority Member of the House Armed Services Committee, he is in a good position to get this onerous provision removed from the bill.

For those of you in Missouri -

Ask Rep. Skelton to entirely delete the "demilitarization" provision -- Section 1062 of S. 1438. Tell him that no "compromise" language is acceptable. You can contact Rep. Skelton as follows:

Phone: 202-225-2876
Fax: 202-225-2695

E-mail: ike.skelton@mail.house.gov

Duke, your mind is too young to worry about such things.

Just concentrate on getting my tree stand fixed up.

Got it?
