Hello,
My name is Elbert and I live in Alberta, Canada. Found this site trying to find info on non-resident hunting in Hawaii. My wife and I will be heading to the Hawaiian Islands between the 25th of May and the 9th of June 2009. I was thinking of maybe going for a hunt in either Kauai or the Big Island. We'll also be in Oahu, but from some of the posts, Oahu may not be the ideal place (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I was trying to decifer the hunting regs and I'm not quite sure if there is an open season for hogs when we're there. Also, can someone actually rent rifles? My wife won't let me bring a rifle since we'll be island hopping. I'm also assuming it may be hard for me to travel with a rifle since I'm not a US citizen or a permanent resident.

Any helpful advice or links would be appreciated. I turn 40 on June 5th and I would love to be hunting on that day. Thanks, in advance, for all the help.

Well, you got the islands right! Kauai and the Big Island have the best public land hunting opportunities. And yep, Oahu for the most part... there's nothing good I can say about it, hunting-wise.

I wouldn't bother with Kauai unless you were in tip top condition and were bowhunting. In that case, I'ld recomend the Waimea Canyon Units F and J or the Napali coast Unit G. Rifle hunting probably isn't the best idea for Kauai.

...shoot, if only you had a friend over here who could loan you a rifle and take you hunting, that would make things a lot simpler.

About seasons, there's pretty much always somewhere with an open season. Each hunting area (A, B, C etc) has their own rules and regulations, incluing their own seasons. We don't really go by a fours-season schedule around here. It's more like a year-round hodge podge.

Just as Nic said. You should read more post on this site to help you decide on where to go. Read post made By Nic, Ev, Doc Cherry and a few others that post their hunts from the island. You'll see most of the post will be from Big Island, kuai,Maui. In that order. I'm sure you'll find something here that will help you decide. Good luck, good hunt and welcome to JHO

Thanks. I've been trying to read as much as a can on here. Looks like I may have to go through the import process if I want to bring my own gun.

You're not leaving the US...travel with a firearm is quick and painless if you do it right. Look up the regs for the airline you're travelling on. Ive flown with my gun a bunch...not a hassle at all.

Ev,
I live in Canada and not a US citizen so there are restrictions on me taking my gun.

I have hunted with these guys (link below) before on the big island.. pricey but fun. When I bird hunted with them they let me use a shotgun. hunted birds with Patrick and had a great time. Their property is huge.

I do a guided hunt because hawaii vacation is kinda my wifes trip, so sneakin away for a day with no prep or hauling around guns works for me.

Good Luck
