During deer season, the check in station is manned from 0500 or 0530 til 1 hour after sunset. My buddies took 4 deer a couple weeks ago. I'll be going there around the 21st til the 25th.

Hey Bobcat Jess... check your email I sent you some stuff! I'd bet the acorns should be dropping there by now. If you can check out Area 4... with lots of thick oak cover. Good luck and whether or not you shoot one, let us know how it went!

Good Morning Gents,

Sorry to report back so late. I have been so busy with work and kids.

Anyways, like always it was a great hunt, but no meat on the table.
It was my first time at Vandenberg and I was pretty much just scouting the different areas on base. It seemed that I was about a month late on the acorn fall. The pigs had already attaked the acorns and have moved on or are meandering around. I did see some fresh sign; found some scat about an hour old. Because of the deer hunting pressure and it being a full moon, the pigs have seemed to be moving at dark.

I found where the pigs are and now I just need to make a plan of attack for next time.

Thanks for all your help,
Jess

Aren't there dozens and dozens of different oak trees???? And aren't their fruiting and dropping of acorns at different times for different oak trees???? I am an ignoramus on oak trees. 'Nuff said.

On the east side of the base the climate is warmer which allows the acorns to ripe and fall sooner. When I was on the west side of the base, which is the beach side where it is cooler and moister, the acorns were barely falling.

On ther other hand, I was in the foothills of Visalia 2 weekends ago hunting and noticed that the acorns were barely dropping as well. I was at about 3500 ft. elevation. These oak trees had plenty of shaded areas.

From my observation, it depends on location and climate.

Any other knowlegeable infomation would be of great help to all us hunters.
Remeber Gents, Knowledge is power....let's get informed from each other on the subject of acorns, which will help us in turn get one step closer to our game.

Jess.
