I'm guessing that the buck eating the velvet is similar to the does (and other mammals except humans) eating their placenta; it is full of nutrients and protein and eating it keeps the nutrients in the animal rather than being wasted.

Well you'd never guess what I came across 20yrs ago in a buddies fridge after his wife gave birth to their first daughter. I believe my question to him went something like this..."Hey, whattya got marinating in the fridge?". Answer........(still makes my knees weak) Astara'a placenta!!!
