Hi all,

I have never pig/javelina hunted before so I have some newbie questions.

Is it pretty much like deer hunting? look for tracks and get on a treestand and wait?

There is some public land here in Tx that allows bowhunting only and wanted to try my luck.

Any hints? tip? tricks?

Thx

I'm fairly new to hog hunting myself but after a few hunts and lots of reading on this board you'll get some really good info.

To me at least, it is very similar to deer hunting in approach. Look for sign, find bedding and feeding areas, try and ambush them at or on their way to food, water or bed. A large percentage of the hog hunters on this board are from CA and then I'd say Texas is second in terms of numbers. You won't find too many folks in CA hunting hogs from stands (or at least you don't read much about it here). Seems to be much more common in Texas for both deer and pigs.

I use a tree stand for some of my deer bowhunting but have never even thought about it for hogs. I guess if you have access to private land with lots of animals a tree stand could be very useful. Spot and stalk is much more popular in CA for chasing hogs.

Same tips as deer though, scout scout scout ! I have found hogs to be much easier to sneak up on too. As long as you have a good wind you can get pretty close to them as long as you have even a little cover.

Good luck
