FEBRUARY 16 BIGHORN SHEEP COUNT VOLUNTEERS:

Volunteers are needed for the annual survey of bighorn sheep in the Mt. Baldy-Lytle Creek region of the San Gabriel Mountains on February 27, and the deadline to sign-up is Feb. 16.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and in good physical condition because they will be hiking to observation sites in the area to count sheep. Binoculars, spotting scopes, cold-weather gear, and good hiking footwear are advised. This survey has been conducted since 1979, and during this time the sheep population has gone from a high of over 700 animals to fewer than 100 and is now estimated to be around 400 again. All volunteers must attend a mandatory orientation meeting 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, at Day Creek Intermediate School, Etiwanda.

To sign up and receive a volunteer information packet, call the Lytle Creek Ranger Station at 909-382-2875.
