I am really interested in getting a new digital camera for all around use but mainly for taking with me to the woods. My main criteria are high optical zoom(preferably with an available telephoto) and ease of use. I am by no means an expert of any kind in photography so ease of use is important to me. I have a canon s330 right now which is a great little camera but only has a 3x optical zoom and that doesnt do me much good. I have seen the pics that ohiobowhunter posted using the olympus C-750 ultra zoom with a 1.7 telephoto and was very impressed....also have seen a few people mention the nikon coolpix 5700 and it also has an available telephoto(1.5). If there is anyone who is real familiar with either of these models or any other out there that might fit my needs please let me know..I appreciate any advice and tips anyone has.

Norman, take a look at the new Canon Rebel EOS SLR digital camera. It is new on the market and the image quality is 6.3 MP and you have the ability to change lenses. I think I would wait until after the holidays before I would purchase one, the prices should drop somewhat after Christmas. Not a lot of reviews on the camera yet. I was looking at the Olympus C-750 Ultra Zoom and the Nikon Coolpix 5700. Everything that I have read about them is the AF is slow and does a poor job.

I Just want to clarify a few things here... I dont want to mislead anyone about the Olympus 750 10x Zoom Camera... It is a Great Camera. I am VERY pleased with it. The Auto Focus does a Very good Job, BUT and heres the But
In the woods there are many things at Varying Distances. and the Auto Focus wants to Lock on whatever is closest always. whether its a Leaf,Branch,small tree whatever. That makes it hard sometimes for this type of Use.
Also in Lower light Condiions and this could be at 10am in the Morning in the woods if its not Bright out and very Overcast and theres shadows in the woods. It will want the flash and will have trouble with a Focus Lock. It will Lock no problem but the Picture will be out of focus. If you use a Laser Light and Hit the laser off the subject which takes a fraction of a second it will LOCK perfectly. I may start trying to do this in the woods.
I also need to play with how the manual focus is done, that would help solve it also.
Clear Open shots are No problem whatsoever.
Just thought I would clarify, If I had anyone misled or not I dont know.
Wildebeast, If this Camera the 740 is Giving you NO PROBLEM in the woods. I would like to know what you are doing, You are the Only one I know of that is Not having problems with it. and I have been on the Olympus DPReview cam forums and seems everyone is to some degree in Low light and in the woods shots without BRIGHT sunshine

OBH...Some of my first attempts at closeups were a disaster, and also my animal photos left a lot to be desired...I attended a local photo class taught by a professional photographer and was amazed at the results.
First..take all your pictures in the highest resolution possible...I take mine in HQ enlarged photo at 3200x2400 pixels. If it is one I want to enlage to 8x10 or 11x16 I will take it in tiff.
Second..with a ten power zoom and low light do not zoom up on the animal--take a high resolution photo and crop, copy and paste the picture you want. your lense will gather more light if not zoomed all the way out. These are large lenses and need more light, sometimes there just isn't enough light.
Third..If you zoom you must have the camera steady, especially in low light. I take a picture the same way I would shoot my bow, any movement is too much.
Also when squeezing the shutter I never release it untill I hear the picture being downloaded.
Most of the problems I've had were not the camera but my fault.
I also do like Wildbird and use a half press focus and then move to set up the picture if brush or limbs are in the way.
