SAN MARCOS, Texas -- If having excellent bass fishing in a private pond or lake is a goal, missing Bass 101 on March 28-29 at the Activity Center here is not an option, according to Billy Higginbotham, Texas Cooperative Extension wildlife specialist.
"If you've been looking for information on how to best manage ponds and lakes for better bass fishing, you'll find the latest information at this course," said Higginbotham who is coordinating the conference with Michael Masser, an extension fisheries specialist.
The statewide workshop will be co-hosted by Texas Cooperative Extension and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Registration before March 14 is $75 per person and will be $125 after that date or at the door.
"Private pond owners who attend will benefit from learning techniques to manage their ponds, lakes and reservoirs for better bass fishing," said Masser. "Participants will hear speakers well-known for their expertise in pond management."
A tour of TPWD's A.E. Wood Fish Hatchery will be available from 1-2:30 p.m. before the workshop. The program starts at 3 p.m. with talks about pond ecology and pond renovation techniques. The day will end with a social, dinner and a panel discussion about improving fishing in ponds.
On March 29, experts will speak about other aspects of managing private waters for better fishing. Topics include water quality, stocking and management strategies, improving existing ponds, aquatic vegetation management, troubleshooting problems, and an ask-the-experts panel.
Among the speakers scheduled is Bill Deauman of U.S. Department of
Agriculture-Natural Resource Conservation Service; Paul Dorsett of Total Lake Management; Gerald Kurten, Mark Webb, and Rick Ott of TPWD; Stan Smith of Aquatic Management Services; Bill Wingo of Magnolia Fisheries; Bob Lusk of Texoma Hatchery; Malcolm Johnson of Johnson Lake Management; Barry Smith of American Sportfish; Allen Rudd of Lone Star Lake Management; and Rich Noble of North Carolina State University.
Also speaking will be Masser and Higginbotham; Ken Hasson and Patricia Varner of Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Lab; and Jan Loven of USDA-Wildlife Management Service.
Three continuing education units for private, commercial and non-commercial pesticide applicators recertification will be offered to participants. A trade show will run throughout the event, and exhibitors may reserve space for $200 per booth.
