I just got off the phone with a very nice lady from the BLM here in San Diego. I called her aslking for a place to shoot as my old spot is closed down for erosion control after the fire last year. I spoke with her for quite some time and she mentioned that more and more areas may be shut down to target shooting. They seem to be going the way of the Cleveland National Forest. She mentioned instances of people shooting signs, fences and gates, and transistors off power lines. Then of course there is the trash. Everyone brings junk out there to shoot and then leaves it there. There is also the native plant concern. She said that the shooters often drive off designated routes and even shoot at "sensitive" native plant species. Lastly, with all the urban encroachment to BLM land there have been increased instances of errant bullets flying into buildings and residences. I cannot attest to hte veracity of any of this, but this is what they claim.
I know I am preaching to the choir but we need to start policing ourselves. When we go out the the sticks to shoot of course we need to clean up, but I think taking along the local BLM Ranger's phone number would be a good idea. If you see someone damaging property or leaving trash, write down their plate number and call them in. We will lose all places to shoot if us good guys don't start doing ssomething.
