I was on the southside last weekend saw 40+ pigs on Friday evening they were out the last 3 hours of daylight. Saturday morning they were out for 2 hours after sunrise saw another 20+, the evening saw 12, Sunday am about 10 pigs. Our morning hunts were over by 7:30-8. Sunrise is about 5:20 and it's dark by 8:45pm not much time for sleep so a nap is a must if you get one on your evening hunt. Did see about 12 Yotes chasing anything but never took a shot while we were pig hunting. We also saw more elk than deer which was odd, one nice bull 5 x 5 at 20 yards under an oak hanging with 2 smaller bulls that were 2 x 2. We also ran across a really big dead elk carcass in the bottom of a canyon, of course it was in the TMV area. I guess the elk didn't know about the new rules.:lol bashing sign:

It was 73 on Friday and 85 on Saturday then in the 90's when I left on Sunday about 1pm.
As it got hotter they were out in the am longer than the evening hunt. They were low or out in the opening for a very short time then they would walking under the trees to stay out of the sun. The grass is thick and about knee high so watch for snakes we didn't see any but you never know. We were on pigs on every hunt, we also walked one pig bedding area on Saturday 1-3pm got on 4 pigs but they were too small, they did give us 50-30 yard shots.
Sunday my buddy scored a nice sow off of Tunis ridge, he passed on pigs on Friday by live oak ridge and missed on Saturday am on Squirrel ridge.
We saw some really big pigs but they were in the bottom of some of the deepest canyons on the southside. Didn't see any piglets and all of the sows were dry and didn't look prego but your mileage may very.
The sow that we did get had been shot in the top of the spine a few months ago, hide had healed up but was missing 2 bones on the top of the spine with some blood shot back strap most likely copper shot while the pig was running. So don't shoot running pigs it's a waste of time, money and your tag.
I don't have any pictures but may get some video if my buddy has some time this week.....I'll post it up if it comes in time for your hunt.

Lots of members have been saying they just aren't seeing as many pigs this year but we are having no problem. The pigs just seem to be in different areas and not as many pigs in the old honey holes. My guess is if you had food, cover and water right next to your bedding area why would you go anywhere. So look deep and go big!!!!

Helpful hints during the day get to know the roads, don't pass on any pigs on Friday night and when you spot the pigs get on them ASAP or they will be gone.

Have some fun and hope the temps cool down for you.:smiley_yahoo:

Where is the story????

whats the deal up there at tejon?? many storys of hundreds of hogs spotted from folks but not many money shots?? do you just get to smoke 1 per season or something and you dudes are waiting for"da kind" im
a tad confused... seems like there would be more pork pounding going on?

Seeing them and sticking them with a bow are two different things. Anyone who has hunted that ranch would understand what I mean. It is not at all like the central coast area. I've hunted ranches from Holister and Salinas down to Paso and Parkfield and many places in between. The terrain is much different and more easilly hunted and accessed. At Tejon you could glass up pigs only 300-400 yards away that are unapproachable due to the steepness of the canyons. There are no barley fields or really any sort of fields. I don't think one acre of that ranch is flat. There are not even any moderate or rolling hills. Everything is straight up and straight down into tight canyons. It is honestly more like sheep and goat country. You really can't appreciate it until you've seen it. We saw tons of hogs that we didn't even attempt a stalk on because they were moving to bed in the mornings or we would run out of light in the evenings. It's kind of hard to plan a stalk when they are on the opposite side of a 1000 foot canyon and only have two steps to make it into thick and impenatrable brush.

With guns it's a different deal. Much more doable. Your only concern is recovery. My bro and I alone could have filled the truck with easily 10+ pigs last weekend.

Plus they charge you per pig and it aint cheap. You can only kill one per trip or two per seasonal membership for the lease guys.

Our story aint much. We had 10 archery guys, 6 hogs bled and more misses to even count. Everybody had plenty of action.

ah..that explains it..the pay for pig thing probably aint cheap. i would
say that tejon sounds like a real tuff gigg as far as terrain goes..
especially if your geeking them with the bow.. good luck on porking
a good one this season and post him up when the deed goes down..
i hate gun hunters...:stir pot:

Tejon charges 450 per pig 2 max, plus 900 for access to the ranch 24-7 for 7 months add the the family and 5 guess passes it's another 400. Last year you could buy an extra tag, I have not asked about it this year but with the layoffs at the ranch I bet they will have the same deal.
The north side is a lot tougher to hunt just like SD said. The roads aren't in the bottom or top of every canyon like the south and it takes a good hike to get to them. Don't get me wrong the south is just as step but has a lot more roads to get around to the top and bottom of the canyons. And now on the south with the TMV rule of no body parts in the area a recovery is making things that much tougher. I'm almost at the point of getting 600 yards of rope to take the animal out of the TMV area.
The last two years the pigs aren't on the roads like in the past. Two years before you could leave camp in the am or evening and run into 10-20 hogs on the roads, we would have to make a rule not to chase any pigs from the roads because it was too easy. I really think it's due to the short grass height which means no cover and less food equals less pigs making it to maturity. I also think the yotes are a lot thicker than in years past which can't help.

fear no canyon ,carry rope,...i'll never leave home without it and it helps that the warnwinch is on the f-150..when in doubt pack it out..although ive been known to walk a few big boars that have been in "those" canyons... regardless, them hogs
know where the nastiest canyons are.. and thats where your gonna find um.. a smart
hunter will assess his recovery before he pulls the trigger.. a guy like me, shoots first
and then fiquers out the recovery..and it aint always good:skeered:
