Was sitting last Friday night at family dinner when my wife told me that all Saturday is going to be rainy and we cannot go anywhere and will have to sit home...
After a couple (maybe more but who counts) shots of magic liquid, a sudden thought crept in to my head.. If we cannot go anywhere, it means she wants to stay at home and i can use it at my advantage and snick out to play little boy's game. (not that I need permissions, just lately I was abusing her good attitude towards my hunting and haven’t spent many weekends with her being fishing and duck hunting, so I promised that “this weekend is yours, honey”)
After getting her permission started thinking where to go. Decided to check my long deserted public land which was very good 4-5 years ago, but hasn’t produced anything in the last 2 years.
Since it was already 11PM i could not count on any of my hunting partner to be happy about my late night calls, so i had to go alone.
And here I’m 5 AM driving to my public land spot thinking that it is worthless since2 years I did not see any pig signs, it maybe someone already there and such, but having only one day at my disposal and having only bad reports from FHL, it was the best option.
Arrived at the starting pint at around 6 Am started moving to an unknown spot I always wanted to check.
After a 2 mile hike I was still about ¾ of miles from the spot I wanted to check when I stopped for a brief moment to consult my GPS.
It was about 6:40 AM, still kind of dark due to the clouds and tree cover when a see a group of huge pigs running 70-80 yards from my location. Took my gun and started looking for the smallest one since I knew that even and average one I’ll not be able to take to my car. But all of them were at least 250+.
I chose the smallest one and pulled the trigger. But they were running fast, I was too exited so, I missed it. I shoot again and miss again and they disappear. Just taking my gun from the shoulder I see another group of 3 of much smaller ones running behind the first group, but they were running even faster.
I shouldered the gun again , chose the smallest one in the group and now knowing I have time for only one shot and I need to make the best of it, I gave much bigger lead and let it fly.
It dropped instantly.
The first picture is dark because it was 6:50AM when I took it and sun was not up yet.
It took me another 2 hour to bring it to the car, but I’m really happy that this area started producing again

Here is the picture at 6:50 AM

Great job and way to play your cards on an old spot!
I've been hearing good things about FHL lately from a buddy in the army. Guess word of mouth doesn't mean mush unless you get out there yourself!

Your success rate is amazing. Curious, do you bring that game cart out with you when you hunt or do you go back to retrieve it after you have harvested an animal?

Congrats. How bad is the reaction from other cars when you are driving home with an animal in that cart visible for the non hunters and tree huggers to see?

Not really, just recently i was lucky, but when i tell that for two years this spot was not producing at all, guess how i found out about it.
When i hunt, i take gun, water, sandwich and GPS. If i get something, i go back to the car, leave rifle and sandwich, take cart(i converted it to be foldable so i can carry it like a backpack), water, knife and GPS.

I havent had any good news about FHL lately. I hunted there about a month ago weekday hunt. Did not see any thing, everything was bone-dry, no fresh rootings, no signs.
This is the reason i decided to go to this spot and not to FHL

You can hunt weekdays at FHL? I thought it was weekends only so I never looked into it.

Yeah I just heard yesterday about how there were huge rooted up spots near the north end. I think someone is messing with me! Haha
Good choice in picking the spot you did as the proof shows.

Maybe, i just say i haven't had any good news, and spots might be there. For sure there are pigs, the question how many and when they come out and where?
I guess till we get good rains in the area, we will not see many of them

I keep hoping for heavy rains down there and the rest of SoCal. I know we need it for multiple reasons, but I just want it to happen for all the hunters sake.
As far as FHL, I asked my pal again when and where. He said they're out before they start training exercises around 6am and in area 28 (south end, I was mistaken). As to the number he's not sure but thinks there must be a good size group judging by the size of the rootings they leave. Not sure exactly where about but he's been training near gold hill. I'll keep pestering him for details.

Do you tie a rope on your animal like hang it from a tree while you go fetch the cart? In order to prevent coyotes or cats from taking it?

No, i just leave it there. If it is on public land i hide it. I'm more concerned about two legged predators.
The longest it takes me to get to the car and back is 1.5-2 hours but usually much faster. My smell is still fresh, so no coyotes or anything else. I also mark my territory by urinating there (not on the animal LOL), which i learned from an old school hunter.
