Started out Saturday evening at a ranch my dad had gotten permission to hunt after trading some work. The rancher had told us we should set up in a deep draw, overlooking the creek where he had been seeing the pigs. We sat there from 4pm till dark withoput any sign of the pigs. Sunday morning we headed back out but decided to go to the upper gate. There were a couple ridges with some small bowls that lead into the upper part of the deep canyon from the night before. We rode the quad in about a quarter mile then walked in slowly. As i topped the first ridge i could see pigs in the bowl above the deep canyon. There were 2 groups, about 10 pigs in each(40lbs to 200lbs), rooting around as they made their way downhill. We backtracted around the hill, then ran the ridge that intersected the bowl they were in. As i made my way over the top i could see the upper group about 250yds out but the lower group had dropped down into the mouth of the canyon. I belly crawled to about 200yds where there was a small rock outcropping. The wind was at my back and I knew the lower group would wind me soon. Only thing I had going for me was they were about 150yds below me and my scent must of been above them. I looked back at dad and he was watching from about 80yds behind me. I waved him forward but he signaled to take the shot! I slowly took a kneeling position, steadied the new T/C Venture .300 Win Mag on a large boar that turned broadside. BOOM..........WHACK!! The gig was up and they all bolted downhill, the boar i hit was running but slower than the rest. I stood and put the scope on him again and sent a second round, WHACK!! He spun around and flopped over!! I yelled at dad to get the only other one that hadn't went down into the canyon. WE both shot at the sow headed up the other side but missed. She was on the move, wasn't waiting around for anything!! We made our way down the the boar,(about 250lbs) gutted it quick and collected ourselves. A long pull of 50yds or so by hand then another 200yds with the quad to the ridgetop. Loaded the pig on the quad and back to the truck and trailer. Made it back to dads house in 20 minutes for some pictures before skinning. Packed on ice and at the butcher before 1pm. AWESOME DAY!! I was shooting some handloaded Nosler 180gr. E-Tips I had been working up the week prior. Hope to go back in a couple weeks and get dad on another group!
