Welcome to Salt Lake photo features Wyoming mountains

11/25/02

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A welcoming photo at Salt Lake International Airport features mountains from another state.

Welcome to Salt Lake City . . . home of the Grand Tetons?

At the courtesy phone center outside the Delta terminal, "Welcome to Salt Lake City" is superimoposed over a picture of craggy mountains. The mountain scene is one of several interspersed among a hodgepodge of hotel and rental car agency ads.

The peaks are definitely not the Wasatch.

After receiving a copy of the photo via e-mail, Chris Hansen, Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce marketing director, confirmed they are the Tetons.

The worldwide advertising giant JCDecaux, which was contracted to sell ads for the phone center, plugs "generic" scenic shots into spaces it doesn't sell, said Barbara Gann, spokeswoman for the airport. It recently switched out autumn pictures for winter scenes.

After a call pointing out the problem, the agency plans to replace the photo, Gann said.

The Teton range in Grand Teton National Park, located just north of Jackson Hole, is one of the Cowboy State's most popular and recognizable natural attractions.

The airport photo isn't the first time Utah has taken a scene from Jackson.

The Utah Travel Council once produced 1,500 "Utah! River Running" posters showing a rubber raft battling rapids on what the caption said was the Green River. It was actually the Snake River just outside Jackson.
