It was about 4:00 yesterday and the wife and I were tired of being couped up hiding in the A/C. I wanted to go shoot my bow for the first time, so we headed up the back roads for the hills. What a day for wildlife!!

6 rabbits
1 road runner
5 seperate coveys of quail
approx. 100 doves on the road
a bazillion lizzards
5 ground squirrels
and two rattlesnakes!

Detailed map to the quail, please....
Actually I'm hoping the BLM lets cattle back in there soon! It has become badly overgrown, and I hate rattlesnakes!!

I took a jog on the horse trail yesterday morning and passed a pair of quail at the "usual" spot. They stay near a seep behind a housing tract. I was not happy that I only saw two. It would have been nicer to see a dozen.

Jogged past several bunnies lying on the trail. A couple of them were content with me passing by only 6 feet away.

On the way up the trail in the afternoon, I took one of my sons. We saw several bunnies, no quail, lizards, and a prairie falcon. I teased the falcon with a few "squirrel squeaks", but he stayed on his perch.

I'm going nuts on the weekend mornings with the Quail waking everyone in the house up. I cannot believe how many are back there and why they're not moving up the hill.
Got a really neat kick this morning: My mom calls me last night and says there's a pair of Dove nest in her bush outside her front door. Going through my mental rolodex...... I blurt out: "That bush is only 3 feet high and 2 feet around!!!" So.... on the way into work this morning I cruised over there... sure enough... Male sitting on a clutch of 2. Dad says they're due to hatch today or tomorrow. He's downloading some pics so I'll post 'em up. He actually moved the bird over so he could see how many eggs there were....

6-6 update......
Well..... the blessed event took place yesterday.....
One Dove hatched. Went over this morning to congratulate my parents and to tentatively schedule the Dove shower..... (details on the party later....)
Thought my dad was chronicalling this event with his digital camera but no. Regular film. So..... we've got 12 to 15 days more of picture taking before this lil' one flies off. (Hopefully to the Valley.... Mom didn't appreciate that comment) I actually found the egg shell they carried off across the street and presented it to the happy grand parents.
Updates to follow......

ESSPosse,

Are you in luck! You have just won a complimentary service call by my crack quail control team, consisting of a quail harvest specialist -me and K-9 support unit-pictured at left. We are here to help you and your family get the sleep you so richly deserve. Just let me know when you would like schedule a quail-suppression treatment and we will be right out. Of course, our business is still in formation, so we can't come today, but I expect to be fully operational by sometime in say, October..... ..

ESSposse:

Yesterday must have been dove day! We had one that just got kicked out of the nest in the driveway. Little or not my bird dog sure knew what that thing was! She half heartedly chased it into the garage before I could call her off. He landed on a desk in the garage and sat there until I had to go close and get something, then he flew onto the boat.

Eventually he let himself out of the garage and disappeard somewhere. This is the second one out of our nest this year.

Well, ESSPosse, the team will be conducting simulated quail suppression manuevers at our Prado Research Facility this Sunday morning, if you would like to see the team in action. Just look for the skinny kid driving all the cars. I'll be the (ahem) formerly skinny guy nearby.
