2nd weekend of A zone is a tradition with the crew I hunt with, we share this weekend with another small group of hunter (same one every year so we know one another) this weekend allows for some serious and well cordinated drive hunting on this private ranch up in Hopland.
we go out Friday night and hunt the backside, a few people on stand and the rest drive down towards the spring sometimes we find some of our favorite oinkers. I am the first of the hunters in the drive that show up at our agreed upon meeting point and as i stand and wait for the rest to show up before we make a jump on the spring i hear two shots one ridge over but i forgot my radio and had no way of knowing what happened.
what did happened was that my friend Erik came across a nice ~160 lbs young boar and missed twice, the thing took off like a rocket and i am standing on the other side waiting for the rest of the group, my .270 leaning against a tree when i hear this crashing of something big running fast in the brush and trees comming down the hill at an angle away from me, a quick assesment of the situation tells me i am NOT getting a shot off from here because of the trees so I grab my gun and run towards where i figure this pig will cross the road, while i am running I load and get the protective cover of my scope.
I come to a place where I can get a clean shot in the 2 seconds the pig will be in clear view (broadside) on the road and I find the pig running in my scope, lead it by 8-10 inches and in the road I drop it at about 35-40 yards, falls like a sack of potatoes hit 3 inches under its ear...i love it when i dont waste any meat.
sorry for just having this one pic but it was late and I had to gut it by truck light.
ps: i did not fill my deer tag...yet
