Looks like he struggled for awhile. What a shame. I sure more of this happens than we realize.

At the Elk Prarie state camp ground on the far north coast of California there is a museum. They have a petrified elk skull with antlers stuck in a tree just like in those photos. I can't recall how old the skull and tree were reported to be, but at least a couple of hundred years. Pretty neat stuff.
