I'm no expert but at West End GC, they have steel targets for the handgunners and have no restrictions on type of ammo. I think it's strictly a function of the thickness and temper of the steel. I generally shoot lead bullets as target loads but will sometimes shoot JHPs (240 gr in a 44 mag) if I'm practicing before a hunt. Neither makes any holes in their targets. I'd think smaller, faster bullet like a 357 mag would have more chance of popping through the plate than a big slow 45 ACP.
Ammo those are made from plow steel I believe I have some used cat bucket blade I can use. As for the knock down targets how big are they and do they stand back up by them selves.
I have a steel "spinning" target made for my 44 Rem Mag. Think it came from Cabellas. I load lead and copper jacketed lead and it's holds up fine. Lot's of fun to shoot.
It even too a hit from the 445 Supermag. That left a mark but didn't go through.
