Hunting hogs for me prior to a full moon in the evening and at dawn has proved not too successful. Has anyone had similar results? Is hog hunting in the rain a positive or a negative?
Rain's a good thing, generally. It softens the ground and they'll start rooting again. It also makes tracking easier. Cloudy days are also a plus because the hogs'll often stay out later in the morning and come out earlier in the evening.
The downside of rain is that it scatters water sources, so the hogs won't be concentrating on isolated springs or creeks.
As far as the full moon, the jury is still out for me on that one. I've heard all the conventional wisdom, but I've seen so many exceptions I have to wonder. It makes sense that the full moon lets prey animals like deer and hogs feed out during the night, but I've seen plenty of deer and not a few hogs in broad daylight after the full moon, too.
Bottom line, if you wanna go hunting, ou ought to get out there rain or shine...full moon or new moon. You can't usually kill much game from the living room couch.
