What do you think about this add from Turners? .44Taurus 6 7/8 inch, stainless steel, ported, vent ribbed barrel for $399. As you know, it would be my backup pig gun and in a few years, probably my primary.

Is this gun any good? How does it compare to the Ruger Redhawk or Blackhawk in quality and accuracy? Why is it cheaper?

Any thoughts you have will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

If you can't see the picture, try the link to turners sale items:
Turners Ad
or Turners Main page - and click the link for the Taurus .44 mag.

Thanks,

Jesse

Hey Jesse,

The only Taurus I ever shot was years ago, and it was one of their S&W clones in .357mag. The gun shot well, and felt OK. I think the company has come a long ways since then.

Anyway, it's a fine enough handgun, and will serve well. It's NOT a Ruger, and won't accept the abuse you can heap on the Ruger guns, but you shouldn't heap abuse on a gun anyway.

Stick with factory loads, or stay away from hot reloads, and it'll do a great job.

I haven't been price shopping in a long time, so I can't say whether it's a good price or not. It doesn't seem all that great, though.

Taurus is OK. But like Speck said, they're not Rugers. People either love them or hate them. The main complaint I've heard is their metal is either excellent or poor. Apparently, the factory hasn't acheived consistancy in quality control yet. They do have a lifetime warranty, so if you do get a bad gun, they'll take care of you. The reason they're cheaper then Ruger or S&W is the fact that they're made in Brazil. If you can swing the extra bucks, I'd go Ruger. Turner's does have Ruger sales a few times a year, and there's some good deals on used Ruger's around. Without question Rugers are the strongest 6 shot revolvers made.
But there again, if your going to use it as a back up for occassional use it should be fine. And the price is good for a new .44 mag. But if you get the handgun hunting bug, and start cooking up some hot loads, your going to want to go Ruger, Colt, or Freedom Arms.

Check out usagunsales.com

They have great prices on brand new firearms. I got my Ruger 357 from them for $150 cheaper than Turner's. You will need an FFL to have it shipped to, but it's worth it. I would go with Ruger.
