What are the best hunt choices for my son to try and draw a apprentice cow tag for California? Dont know too much about FHL but I just want to know the best zone to hunt with the most elk, if he draws it? A bull would be nice but chances of drawing a zone with 1 tag is slim to none.

Your best draw odds are with the bishop period 2 hunt. Draw odds are like 1/28 with 4 tags available it had 100% success rate off of last yrs stats. FHL is a good place but odds for 2 antlerless tags are 1/43 with a success rate at 100%. Both hunts are good but all bishop tags are antlerless and FHL tags are 2 antlerless and 1 bull tuff call, go for the meat first I say.

Odds say hunt # 464. It was 1 in 16 last year and looking at all apprentice hunts for last year the next best is a 3 in 113 chance in hunt # 489.
good luck

Thanks guys. I also say at this point, go for the meat. I went with best odds and I went ahead and put myself in for best odds and went with cow tag. I have never hunted elk before so if for some reason I do draw a tag I would be happy with freezer full of meat.
