What's the first cartridge or firearm that flashes through your mind? As far as rifles go I see a double rifle. But when I am thinking about African cartridges I think 375HH or 470 nitro express.

The 458 win mag, although somewhat of a failure in it's early release, is also in my thoughts just because I used to see so many PH's with it. Now it's the 458 Lott that we all carry or have all chambered up to. I don't know a single really wealthy PH so none I know are using doubles. If any of the PH's I know had a doubles they would sell it and buy a nice house!

By a wide margin today the PH's I work with and know use the 458 Lott or the 375HH.

My first thoughts also go to the double in either 470 or 500 NE. or a custom 1917 or 98 by G&H in 404 Jeff.

The 7x57 and 303 also come to mind when I think of Africa.

To answer your question, what pops into my mind is the 375 H&H.

By the way JJ, exactly what ranch was that in Texas that you killed that 400lb. cougar with your pocket knife?!?

I think that picture has spawned more internet myths than Bigfoot!

It was not in Texas it was on Mars. That is a Martian Moutnain lion. Do they have mountians on Mars? Must have because I took that little one on Mars. Oh no wait a minute, that is a faked photo with an African lion superimposed over my body with some fancy photo editor software. Or wait was it killed in Minnisota? Utah? New Mexico? Or may be it's the story of the old black and white photo which was changed to color with some digital imaging software? Like gone with the wind! Yep I have head so many stories about this lion now it's without a doubt the most popular debate going on several sights I don't visit. There has not been a week gone by this year that I have not had an email from somebody pointing out another site with some guy posting a BS story.

My favotire of all was when a friend of mine sent me the photo claiming it was from r near Dallas and weighed 254 pounds. It's was killed on a friends ranch just a few weeks earlier. Everyone in that town was shocked there was such a big lion there. Nobody more shocked then he was when I told him to take a close look at the guy in the Photo holding it. I also sent him another couple photo's of the lion that we took!

The fellow from Utah was from the Hearld and wanted to do a story in his paper about this giant lion from Utah. When I told him it was from Washington he was so embarrased and could not get off the phone fast enough!

Yep, you called it this has become one heck of lot of non-sense!

Never saw an O/U Double rifle. I bet it's a side by side and there was a typo someplace.

Back when I lived in Fmn, NM there was a gentleman there named Butch Searcy who was using Ruger Red Label shotguns and building accessory rifle barrel sets for them. Since then he has moved to CA and has designed his own action. It is now a side/side.

416 Remington Magnum for African dreaming. I use it to take a nice respectable Cape Buff. Not greedy just want a good trophy with a great story to tell.

Like Jimi said "Still raining still dreaming" in my case still dreaming, still raining. :D

For me the cartridge that pops into my mind when I think of African hunting would have to be the .366DGW. It is a direct neck down of the .416 Rigby and is in the tenth eddition of Cartridges Of The World. This cartridge shows alot of promice but then again I am predjudice since I am the guy who developed it.
Probably the most versital and shooter friendly African cartridge would have to be the good old .375 H&H. Its recoil is light enough so most shooters can handle it and shoot well. There are other cartridges that are more effective but many shooters over here are not ably to handle the stouter recoil with out a sore shoulder and a flinch.

I second that 600 Nitro Express! What a great piece. Now I can't think of Africa without seeing that lion just about making kitty food out of that hunter. WOW!

live2hunt: you won't make it out of the airport customs and firearm permit office with an autoloader in any African country!
