How about some introductions?
<

Where are you from and where do you hunt elk?

Do you use a bow or Rifle? What kind.

Who taught you how to hunt elk and when was your first elk hunting trip?

What is your dream elk hunt?

I'm from southern California and started chasing elk in 1980. I hunt AZ 6A, CA and UT southern zone. I've never been drawn in CA but I'm one of those dreamers.

I currently use a PSE Coyote recurve and a 300 Winmag.

My dream elk hunt would be a pack in with a bow during the bugling season in WY or NM.

I live in Colorado and hunt Elk only in Colorado. I am an off and on Elk hunter, when I do hunt, it is either in GMU 59,(30 minutes from the house) or on private land in GMU 21 in NW CO.
Shoot a Weatherby Mark V 30/06 and as of this year a Browning BAR .300WinMag

It has been a long time but we used to run a hunting camp on the Flat Tops near Buford, CO. I've used several rifles a 30/30 Win, 30/40 Krag, 348 Win, 30/06 Spg.

I live in California on the left coast now.

Lifelong Oregonian, been hunting Oregon elk for 30+ years. I archery hunt with a Brackenbury recurve and several homemade selfbows. The first two weeks of the season I hunt near home, the last two weeks I go to eastern Oregon. My hunting partner lives on the eastside and keeps tabs on the elk year-round.

Muskrat89: ANY Bull taken with a bow is a trophy!
___

I live and hunt in New Mexico, with a Buckmasters PWC. My favorite hunt area is the San Pedro Parks Wilderness Area (deployed two cameras there last week; a bunch of elk and no ATVs). Desolate, quiet, and physically challenging are words to describe GMA 6A. A close second is the Mount Taylor area (GMA 9). LOADED with elk, but also with hunters (ATVs). Both areas are three hours (to camp) from my home.

My 300 WinMag is reserved for killing coyotes (no, they NEVER run off).

My dream hunt is taking a Grizzly with ANY bow without an armed guide

(yes, addicted to things that scare me). When I move to Montana in a few years I'll update this information.

Been hunting Unit 6 A whenever I am lucky enough to get drawn. Harvested 1 6X6 Bull in 1994 with a rifle , then put it away and have been Archery hunting ever since then. I use a Browning Mirage SX. I have harvested 2 really nice Cow elk with my bow and am waiting to draw a 6A Bull Elk Tag. I would like to harvest 1 really nice Bull and then I will go back to Cows , you just can't beat the quality of the meat from a cow compared to an Old Bull

I chase them here in my back yard up to about 6 miles up the mountain and sling arrows at them starting in Sept., this is when the rut is peaking out and the bulls are real vocal.

I'm in So Cal. Due to time constraints I can't seem to get out of the state so I keep putting in for Cal elk....Im 35 now so I figure I'll either draw sometime before I'm 60 or so, or my schedule will loosen up and I can get out of state. If I draw anytime soon, I'll use my Weatherby .30-06.

I'm Bill from Ripon, CA. Didn't start elk hunting until I moved to Washington State in '97. There I hooked up with some huntin' buddies who'd been hunting elk there for 20 years. So, I'm still relatively new to elk. Started off with a washington muzzleloader elk tag and a .54 cal sidelocke. While up there, I used to hike up the treeline on the east side of Mt. St. Helens around the Labor Day weekend just to hear the elk buglin' but was not ready to get into archery.

Picked up a bow last summer (PSE Quantum), shot it and thought,
'hey, I can do this...' After a lot of target practice, off to Oregon I went for my first bugling season hunt.

I got hooked on archery elk season last year because I found a bugle I could finally get a decent sound out of--talked to 3 bulls my first year with a bugle and that was all she wrote....bugling season for me or no season.

This season, I get to go to NM. There'll be a party of 5 (maybe 6 because there's at least 1 more tag authorization available I found out this weekend).

One fellow has called in and shot a couple of big bulls--5x5 & 6x6. So, I hope to learn more this season and will continue to watch videos, listen to tapes, and practice my callin'.

Dream hunt...well, anywhere there are lots of big bulls talkin'.

Roger from big MO. Hunt with Bow,ML, and my 7 Mag. Have yet to score with the bow but maybe this year in NM if drawn. Got my first bull in 1968 and did not go back to CO until 89. I have not missed a year since and will keep it up as long my body will permit. Have hunted CO and NM. Have 5 Bulls and a Cow since 89. This year should be a good one as I am in unit 76 in CO. Counting days!!!!!

Oscar in Sacto, Elk since 2001 in Oregon, will hunt in CA when drawn. Using my 30-06 and Jennings bow. I busted a 5x5 in Oregonia in 2001 (rifle) and didn't quite catch up to some cows last year (bow). I'll get them this year though. Dream hunt? Well, Oregon soon as well Utah, Wyoming, but I'd have to say Colorado.

Being in Ohio, I'm about as far from good elk hunting as you can get. I've hunted in Montana with a friend that lives there three times. This past year I was lucky enough to get a 3x3. Elk country is rough at best, but NW Montana has a reputation of being some of the roughest. Everyday hunting in the mountains is a good day. This past year we used horses and that made the hunt something very special even if we were somewhat limited to where we could take the horses in. I use a Rem 700 synthetic stock 30-06 with a 3x9 Redfield and handloaded 180 gr Nosler Partitions.
My dream hunt would be a horseback guided pack in hunt in the Thorofare region in Wyoming. I'd love to be hunting during the rut to hunt bugling bulls. Even though it would take a major equipment update from my whitetail rig, I'd love to hunt with either archery or blackpowder. Heck, I want to do it all! Second choice would be any remote pack in camp so long as there are elk in the area.

SW Wyoming we usually draw Pine Mtn. area tags. This year we drew cow tags for that area.

Do you use a bow or Rifle? What kind.
I am now learning to use a bow a Hoyt Raider. Seems to shoot fairly straight. And I usually hunt with a Rem. 30.06 with a muzzlebreak. I love that gun.

My husband took me on my first elk hunting trip about 10 years ago.

What is your dream elk hunt?
I love the area that we are in now, but I would love to go to Alaska to hunt.
