How about some introductions?

Where are you from & where do you hunt in Africa?

What type of rifles do you take to Africa?

What type of game is your favorite to hunt?

If you haven't been to Africa yet, where and what type of game do you plan on hunting someday?

What is your dream Africa hunt?

Jesse,

From Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Have hunted in South Africa twice, and Zimbabwe 10 times. Spending a total of 250 days in the bush.

I have used a Remington 700 in 25-06 and a 375 H&H magnum, also in a Remington 700 Safari on one hunt. I used factory ammo exclusively then, Remington 120 grain SP and Winchester for the 375. Both 300 Silver Tips and Solids. The 25-06 was used on impala and warthogs, and the 375 H&H was used on zebra, waterbuck, kudu, eland, steinbuck, hyena, buffalo and elephant.

On one hunt I have used a 416 Weatherby magnum, Weatherby Mk V, with 400 grain TB Bear Claws and 400 TB Sledge Hammer solids, both handloaded. I used this on both buffalo and elephant.

On a few hunts I have used a 270 Ackley built on a Remington 700, using both the Barnes X 130 grain bullet, and the 140 TB Bear Claws.
This rifle was used on all teh plains game except eland.

A 416 Rigby Improved was used once, on two lions, several buffalo and one elephant. Bullets were the same as I used in the 416 Weatherby.

A 7.21 Lazzeroni was used on one hunt to shoot all the plains game, such as impala, kudu, sable, zebra, klipspringer etc. Bullet used was the 160 grain Swift A-Frame.

A Lazzeroni 8.59 was used on one hunt for plains game, as mentioned above. Bullet used was the Barnes X 210 grains.

A 270/404 was used on one hunt for plains game. Wichester 140 grain Failsafe bullets were used

A 270/404 Short was used on 2 hunts for plains game. Jensen 150 grain bullets were used in this one.

Two 375/404, both built on the Dakota 76 ac tion, were used on several safaris to hunt everything from duikers to elephant.

A 30/404 was used on one hunt in South Africa for plains game. Severel bullets were tried on thsi hunt, including the Sierra Match King, Nosler Ballistc Tip and Partition, Swift A-Frame and the TB Bear Claws. All in 180 grains.

Buffalo is my favorite game to hunt.

This year we are going to Tanzania for the first time.

I live in litchfield county Connecticut for the most part but have a place in Gilbert, Arizona too and love it there between Christmas and April. I have hunted in Tanzania and South Africa and have taken buffalo and plains game but no elephant or cats yet. For my three buffalo I used a M70 winchester in 416 Rem Mag with 400gr Barnes X and solids. I also used this combo on plains game while there out of necessity. It worked great. For plains game in South Africa I used a 9.3X62 CZ 550 American with North Fork bullets (250grs) with great results. Everything from bushbuck to Waterbuck, 10 animals with that rifle.
Africa is my favorite hunting grounds with buffalo at the top of the list.
In the states I love to hunt the eastern whitetail, everywhere from Maine to Pennsylvania and my favorite rifles are a very old, used but not abused rem 760 in 308. I also carry a M70 in 06 particularly if the country is more open. Out west it's mostly Elk when I can get a tag somewhere. There I still take the 06 but I do have an old pre 64 M 70 300 H&H that gives me a lot of confidence for the 300 yd shots. I honestly don't like to shoot at Elk much farther than that. I hope to hunt Leopard on my next trip to Tanzania. I'm already working on it for next year.

Hi There,

I have hunted in Zambia, Zimbabwe, RSA, Namibia and Tanzania. I have also worked or visited Mozambique, Malawi, Kenya, Ivory Coast and Angola.

I have shot Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard and Lion. Crockodile, Hippo and about two dozen other antelope.

I like the classic calibers and don't feel that any cartridge worth dealing with has been invented since the 300 Holland. My favortie African calibers are the 404 Jefferys and the 450 1 1/4. I like the 300 Holland also.

I have hunted in Spain, Belgium, England, Argentina, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, New Calidonia, Canada, Alaska and most Western states.

I am retired or unemployed depending on what comes up next.

As far as hunting in Africa, only birds sqrirrels and the elequent placing of lead pellets in the hinds of baboons and other various monkeys.

I grew up in a small villiage (Badioulla) in Senegal 500 miles east of Dakar (capital) where my parents were missionaries for NTM out of Florida. I've seen every type of animal mentioned in the above, and always dreamed of hunting them. Unfortunately my family moved back to the U.S. while I was in 4th grade and I never had a chance to hunt from behind the scope of a high powered rifle. I've got an infinite # of stories and no time so maybe around that camp fire at FHL in April. One of the other missionaries, Brent Mitchell came home all the time with wart hawgs and the occasional Kudu. Around this time lion tags were 50 US $.

Hello Jessie and all JHO members!

Yes I am a "new" member. JHO looks like a very good forum, one that I could end up spending to much time on! Which is a good thing!

I hang my hat on the east coast of the good old USA, New Jersey. My three favorite things in life are Hunting, my work, and my 2 dogs! I am a full time Taxidermist, (can't wait to get into my studio in the morning) I've been in the trade for 29 years, owning my studio for the past 21 years. A offically certified measurer for Safari Club International,(Master), Boone & Crockett, Pope & Young, Rowland Wards, Records of Exotics, Longhunters, Buckmasters, and Records of North American Whitetails. Yes I do enjoy scoring.

I've been to Africa on 5 Safaris, all to Zimbabwe, hunted south east and up near Vic Falls. I have a 6th safari planned for 2005, I get excited just talking about it! I will be hunting Lioness and Sable on that trip, and anything else that walks into my crosshairs! Have taken over 80 trophies there, including Leopard, Hippo, Cape Buffalo and just about a whole troop of Baboons! my favorite critter to hunt! I plan to mount all of them and scattered through out my home! One of the most exciting animals I hunted was the Buffalo, never hunted animal that wanted to kill me more then I wanted to kill him! I was so, - - - - whats the word I'm looking for - - - - "emotionally moved" by them that I wrote a article and 2 magazines published it! Surprised me! The "African Hunter" and "the African Sporting Gazette".

Weapons of choice, very simple, a .270 Interarms and a Remington .416, both have Nikon scopes, the .416 has removeable mounts, I enjoy shooting with the iron sights more then the scope. I'm in the market for a .223, for the little critters! Factory ammo is my game, Federal nothing else...
I've done alot of North American hunting as well, deer, Caribou, Moose, Elk, Pronghorn, bears. Bowhunting is weapon of choice here, I shoot a Black Widow recurve. Took a P&Y buck in NJ a few years ago.
Well, that's me in a nut shell! look forward to meeting everyone on here...........

got to get back to work! As always, Good Hunting!!!

I live 9 months a year in Washington state and the remainder of time at my lodge in South Africa. The Lodge is in the Northern Province near the Limpopo river. Saeed Who posted above has been to hunt at our lodge several times. He has also helped arrange hunts for his friends and employees with us at the lodge.

I prefer a 375HH for all hunting in RSA, however we have not had any struggle with good shooters using much less gun. More Americans bring a 300 mag of one cartridge design or another then all other calibers/ cartridges combined.

I cannot say what is my favorite species to hunt as each has it's strong points. My favorite style of hunting is by spot and stalk in the mornings and during the day. Then by watching water as the sun sets. The entertainment of seeing all the different species come to water and interact is as much a part of the hunt as shooting something is. Game viewing and seeing huge trophy animals is as good as it gets.

When hidden in a blind and having a Rhino only 20 yards from you or closer and Giraffe looking into the blind staring you in the face at 10 feet, it's as close to jurrasic park as we can get.

As ar as a dream hunt? I want Giant forest hog. I think a giant Forest hog would be tops for me.

I'm from Corona CA, but now live in Long Beach.
I went to Namibia in 2002 for a typical plains game bag.
I loved every minute of it and it was worth every penny, can't wait to go back.
I took a Win Mod. 70 in 7mm rem mag..... all five animals dropped with on shot. I was shooting handloads with 150gr barnes x.

Next time its going to be for Buff with a .416

Hi Jesse

Thanks for the membership to this very interesting site. I live in South Africa, and grew up hunting in the Ellisras, Melkrivier, Thabazimbi area, and relocated to the Eastern Cape seven years ago.

As much as certain members of the forum tend to slam the Eastern Cape, I would seriously have no problem in saying it is as good, maybe even better than hunting the Limpopo Province.

I have been active in Nature Conservation, Game Farm Management, and been an active hunter for 18 years. Many of my PH friends who have hunted all over Africa come back here to stay, and call this home.

It would be great opening a forum debating the various regions in which a hunter can enjoy a hunting safari, and then the members could be the judge.

I am from Pennsylvania and hunted once in South Africa.
I took a .300 WSM and shot Gemsbok, Zebra, Blue Wildebeest and Impala. I wanted to shoot a Kudu but had only unethical oppurtunities that I did not take.

I am from the Bay Area Peninsula, California. I have hunted in Namibia about three years ago and liked it so much that went again the following year, this time with my wife, to South Africa then Zimbabwe for over a month. One week of hunting, one week of what they call Ultimate Bundu Safari in Kruger National Park, one week in Zimbabwe, white water rafting (class 5) in Zambezi river, Great white shark cage diving in Seal Island and drove the coast of So. Africa from Port Elizabeth down to Cape Town.
I harvested a number of plains game using my Browning 22-250, 30-06 Remington and 300Weatherby, lost a zebra, half of them mounted in So. Africa and half here in the US. Taxidermist is cheaper in So Africa but the result is a lot better here in the US. I plan to go again, but this time hunt with a bow and arrow. Africa is a very beutiful country, hunters should really make an effort to try it even just once. Its an experience you will never forget. Too bad the flight is too long. For those of you who plan to go and need first hand experince PM me.

Hello Jesse,

I'm originally from Colorado, but didn't grow up in a hunting family. It wasn't until college in the late 60's when I had some roommates from NW Colorado that introduced me to hunting big game. I was quickly hooked, and in the next 10 years I sucessfully hunted mule deer, elk, antelope, and black bear using a .30-06 that I stocked, a recurve bow, a .45 cal Kentucky rifle that I built, and a .45 ACP pistol.

I moved to NW Montana in the mid 70's and became a hunting fool. I now live in SW Montana and am a certified hunting and gun nut. I've hunted 4 western states plus Alaska, and 2 trips to NWT, Canada. I built a 1000 square foot Trophy Room addition on to my house, and it's almost filled up.

I made my first trip to South Africa in 2000 on a Plains Game hunt we bought at a SCI auction.
We hunted two properties in the Northern Province where I took 9 animals, including Kudu, Gemsbok, and Limpopo Bushbuck. On that trip I used a 7mm Rem Mag with Nosler Ballistic Tip handloads. We also made a short side trip through Kruger Park.

In 2005 I made my second trip to Africa with a week in Zimbabwe, taking Cape Buffalo and Chobe Bushbuck with a .375 Rem Ultra Mag that I stocked, and 300 gr TSX handloads. I like bushbuck! Also got to see Victoria Falls. I then hunted two properties in South Africa, one in Kwa Zulu Natal where I took a beautiful Nyala, and another in the Free State where I took 4 more antelope and the ranch owner took me to a seldom visited and well hidden rock overhang that had numerous ancient bushman pictographs. For these hunts I used my .375 RUM and a 7mm Rem Mag with 160 gr Nosler Accubond handloads.

I am now looking forward to two weeks this September with Johnny Vivier in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa where I will be hunting in two different camps for Plains game available there including Cape Bushbuck. Did I mention that I like Bushbuck? For this trip I plan on using my .375 RUM with 260 gr Nosler Accubond handloads.

Hi Everyone,

New to the site. Live in California and have hunted in Botswana and Tanzania. Have taken Zebra, Steinbuck, Cape Buffalo, Warthog, Dik Dik, Hartebeest, Hyena, Grants Gazelle, White Bearded Wildebeest, Baboon, Guinea Fowl, Spur Fowl and Francolin (I think thats everything).

Rifles used were a (borrowed) 308, 338 Win Mag, 375 H&H and a 500 Nitro Express double rifle.

Have a full bag (Elephant, Leopard, Lion, Buffalo, etc....) in TZN booked for 09 but if the fees stay really screwy may switch over to Zim or Botswana.

Love to hunt DG and will likely try for a Cape Buffalo with a bow during the next trip. Wish me Luck!!

Thanks, BigSwad,
I been busy of late, so have not been able to participate in the forums much. What with trips to New Mexico, class schedules and everything, Hunter Ed on this last Sat and Rifle on Sunday. Had a famous baseball star as a student recently, took him and a buddy on their first deer/bear hunt, and they found how tough it is, hiked them around about 10 miles a day. Then took them on a successful pig hunt, trying to get them ready for an Elk hunt in Colorado. We may have a real advocate for hunting in a couple of years, he has become an avid hunter, and is already talking about Africa hunts, full body mounted Lions, etc.! I told him I'll go along to Africa to back him up! LOL
