Greetings Jesse,
I'm from Tennessee and have hunted Zimbabwe and RSA several times. Will return this year to Zim and to a new hunting camp we are opening in Mozambique. My favorite game is Lion. I generally take two rifles; a .280 in Ruger M-77 or Mark V Weatherby, and a Remington 700 VS in .223. Sometimes I take a .300 RUM in Rem 700 Sendero. For Lion I use the .375 pushing 300 grain Swift A-Frames. I enjoy hunting any of the spiral horns and all the cats. But to be honest, I like hunting all of Africa's game animals. Although I'm a fan of Nosler's Accubond bullet, this year I'm taking some of the new Federal cartridges pushing the Trophy Bonded Tip bullet. Good hunting!

Most people I have talked to described the documentary as well-balanced and surprisingly fair, given how it started out. I did feel some sympathy for Theroux that he was not prepared to shoot the pig at 30 yards from a blind: perhaps if he had genuinely hunted the creature to feed a table of his friends, then maybe he'd have pulled the trigger.

A couple of years ago I posted in this section about my first two hunts in Africa. At that time I was looking forward to my third trip to South Africa. In September of 2007 I made that hunt with Johnny Vivier Safaris to the East Cape Region of South Africa. On this trip I hunted on three major properties or concessions and two smaller properties.

I only took one rifle on this hunt, my .375 RUM with 270 gr Barnes TSX handloads. I was definately NOT under gunned! Most animals were taken with one shot kills at ranges from 30 to 348 yds. All hunting was spot and stalk.

I ended up shooting 13 animals with my .375 RUM plus a Cape Grysbok that I shot with a borrowed .308 with a full metal jacket bullet to reduce damage to his cape.

On this trip I was primarily hunting the "not so ordinary" animals that are found in the Eastern Cape Region. These animals included 2 Steenbok, a Red Lechwe, a Bontebuck, a Tsessebe, a Cape Eland, a Black Springbok, a Jackal, 2 Gemsbok, a Vaal Rhebuck, a Cape Kudu, a Cape Bushbuck, and the Cape Grysbok.

I don't have any definate plans of going back to Africa, but I have not made my last trip there. I would like to hunt other countries like Namibia and Mozambique. I would like to hunt Cape Buffalo again and maybe Leopard, and I definately want to hunt Sable and any other small antelopes that would be unique to the area hunted, and after three hunts to 9 properties in South Africa and one hunt in Zimbabwe, I still haven't shot a Warthog!

I am from WY and I have been to Africa 4 times! It is one of my favorite places on earth. At this point I have only hunted in South Africa, But I really want to hunt in other countries. I have hunted mostly plains game and I was fortunate to get a great lion. I shot my plains game with a 7mm and alot with my bow. I shot my lion with a .375. I still want to hunt buffalo, sable, waterbuck, and a few others. I actually have looked into buying property over there because I love it so much!!

I'm from California. I've hunted Africa 4 times, for a total of 68 days. Two 24 day hunts, a 15 day hunt and a 5 day hunt.

My first trip was to Zimbabwe in 1983, on the Deka Safari Area with Roy Vincent, then of Rosslyn Safaris. We hunted 24 days and took elephant, leopard, 2 big buffalo, kudu, sable, waterbuck, zebra and a host of other game, 16 animals total. On that hunt, I used a .270, a .300 win mag, and a .458.

My next trip was to Zim again, and also with Roy again. We hunted the Charara Safari Area for 15 days, taking 2 buffalo and a bushbuck, but were unsuccessful in our main objective of taking a large lion. We did go back to Matetsi for a couple days at the end, where I took another bull elephant. This trip, I carried only a .338 win mag and a wonderful old Rigby in .470 NE.

In 1989, I hunted in Botswana with Cecil Riggs, then of Vira Safaris. 24 days, split between 8 days in the Kalahari and 16 days up north in the swamps. We took a fantastic bag that included 2 more big buffalo, a leopard, a lion, 2 gemsbok, hartebeest, kudu, lechwe and still other plains game. We failed to take only eland (never saw any) and sitatunga (missed one at about 300 yards.) I used a .300 win mag and .416 hoffman on this hunt, along with a 12 gauge shotgun that I quickly ran 500 rounds through while birdshooting in the north. It was a grand time in most regards. The highlight of this trip was taking a lion on the 22nd day, after tracking his pride on foot for miles. Man, do I ever wish elephant had been open then, as we saw one bull that was a mid-90s pounder.

After that, we had kids and family life took over for the next 20 years. While I still did a good amount of north american hunting, africa got put on the back burner.

Fast forward to 2009, I took my entire family of four on a 2 week South African vacation that included a little hunting at the end. We toured Kruger Park on our own, excellent three days of game viewing there. Then, we spent a few days at Monwana Lodge, which is located in the Thornybush Game Reserve. That was truly spectacular game viewing and highly recommended for anyone going to that region. Finally, we finished up with some hunting with Koos Moulder of Spear Safaris. I wanted my 21 year old son to get a tast of African hunting, and he took a warthog, impala and very nice kudu. I shot an nyala the final morning. We both shot my son's .270 on this short hunt.

I think for any of us who've hunted the Dark Continent, nothing else compares afterward. The memories I've made over there are still bright, some of them more than 25 years ago. If you haven't been, you owe it to yourself to go.

I am from the Dallas, TX metroplex.

I have hunted South Africa twice. I used a CZ .375 H&H loaner rifle.

Warthog is my favorite.
