If you are an archer, take a look at Oregon. You can buy an over the counter tag and hunt a bunch of different areas. Some of the areas are either sex...Check out their website for more information.

Good luck!

Utah is a great place for an inexpensive archery tag and a lot of public land to hunt. You can also hunt the Wasach Front extended archery zone until the end of December.

Are you hunting rifle or archery? Most zones in CO offer OTC either sex archery tags, or you can get a cow-only tag if you prefer for about half the cost. You can also get OTC rifle tags in most zones, especially after the opening period.

There are some good zones with pretty good success rates if you're not trophy hunting.

CO. Anywhere in the White River National Forest area. Lots of Public Land with campgrounds you can hunt out of.

That's a real, real tough hunt. You're looking at m a y b e a 3-5% success rate at best. There are units in CO ID, and Wyo (General units) that are or have been over 20% success for archers in recent years.

On the WF not only is the terrain straight up/down, the elk densities are not great...sure, there are some good bulls but A LOT of guys have hunted them 10+ years--competition is outrageous...they are as pressured as it gets imo. I still haven't figured out where elk are in the wasatch extended archery elk zone. Those who do know are closed lipped, the elk don't bugle (due to pressure)...there must be at least a few thousand archers that hit it off & on too...deer a much easier there (but not nearly as plentiful as other areas of the state imo).

My little slice of the Wasatch Front behind my house is just south of the extended border by 2 miles or so. I finally figured out where some bucks hang out after hiking it several times a week during the middle of my second summer. And, I finally have a little bit of a handle on about 50 head of elk down here. Elk & Deer east of Ogden, Farmington, downtown, Sandy & Draper are more abundant.

I personally will be going out to the Uintas (most elk for general bull area) for General Archery Bull, or day cow/spike hunts between Heber City and Price off the 40 corridor.....I will probably end up in Idaho doing a combo elk/bear hunt and just do some weekend cow/spike hunts here in UT or bull IF I figure out the extended area for elk. I have found a few deer spots on the extended...not as tough to do.

If I were trekking a long ways for OTC bull elk from CA, I'd go to either CO (most elk), ID, UT or OR in that order. UT has some great limited entry antlerless but the general archery anterless is very good albeit not nearly as good as Wyo or CO imo. Spend $400 bucks on a fantastic limited entry area in Wyo for cow and you'd have an awesome hunt! ...there should be leftovers.

Also, if you're not averse to $500-$1000 cow tags, there are some excellent CWMU cow tags or Indian Reservation cow tags too.
