What do you think is the most productive way to harvest a wild hog.Spot and stalking.Or sitting in a stand near a feeder.Waiting for them to come in.Or which way do you prefer to hunt them ?

Taking a stand or spot and stalk.  I didn't know you could bait them (I assume a feeder is put out to attract them).

I don't believe you can bait them in CA.  Different states have different rules regarding that and every other aspect of hunting, it would seem.

I prefer spot and stalk.I have never hunted over a feeder mostly because it's illegal in Cal.

I live and hunt in South Texas, and have hunted pigs from a stand and spot and stalk.
But, the most exciting way to hunt hogs is with dogs!!  Running through the brush following yelping dogs is a rush that is hard to explain.  On the other hand it is a lot more dangerous than in a stand.

Beerdonga:

There's got to be some more guys on this site from states other than California, that could answer that for you.  They're probably on the Turkey Page, or the Whitetail Page right now.   I've never hunted with dogs.  Sounds like it could be real exciting, until you walk up and pop the hog in the ear, point blank.  I don't know, it's probably a real rush.  Anything that gets the adrenaline pumping is worth looking into.

Out here, we spot and stalk. If you are in flat, brush-choked country, then you probably can't see the hogs.  If you are in a hilly area, with some meadows, you should be able to spot and stalk.  Everyone has their own way of doing things.

One Track,

Actualy you dont walk up and pop them in the ear,  you wait till the dogs find the hogs and lock onto the hog.  The dogs will hold the hog long enough for someone to grab its back legs then another person can stab the hog in the heart with a knife.  That is the most popular way to hunt hogs with dogs.

A friend of my brothers.Goes to Texas.A claims they use 8 foot spears. And sit in a tree till the hog walks under them. Then they jump from the branch down on the hog.Spearing them.Sounds just as crazy as grabbing them and kniveing them. How many battle wounds does one get hunting them that way?

The most battle wounds that you recieve are from tripping over stuff in the night and landing on a mesquite tree or a cactus.  This happens frequently compared to being injured by a hog, which I have rarely seen or heard of in my experiance.  But the few stories I have heard of werent pretty.

Hey MossyHorns, most of the guys on this board are from Calif. which doesn't allow feeders or bait... there is another board in Texas that might be of interest to you:
http://www.texasboars.com
real nice people there too, they'll have more answers to your stlye of hunting.  I hunted in Texas before and really enjoy both hunting over feeders and when that got slow, went out and try to spot and stalk. Good Luck

We cant bait here in Illinois either. This hunt is on a private ranch which DNR does not govern.Although the hogs are free rangeing. No license are required for hogs.So i guess that makes baiting and feeders legal.Ive made my mind up im still hunting those critters.More of a challenge as far as im concerned.Specially your first timehunting them!!
