I try to give quick reviews on places I go to for the benefit of the members here. Feel free to look them up under my screen name and add your own input. So far I've written about Feather River WA, Sacramento Bypass and Cache Creek. White Slough: I went to pond 7 today, it was easy to find, the directions on the DFW website are easy to follow. Take I-5 to highway 12 (there's a Flag City sign and a flying J at the exit), head West away from the gas stations. The first street on the right is Guard Street, make a right there and follow it down until it makes a right hand turn and turns into Cotta Rd. A short ways down the road on the right is the parking area. My first impression was one of disappointment and disgust. It looks like people have been burning trash piles in the parking area, there's garbage pretty much everywhere.. The pond is a short walk (about 50-75 yards) away and there's a pretty well beaten path to walk down. Semi-tall grass, fox-tails and stickers.. The pond is surrounded by about 3ft thick rows of reeds. The water was deep blue but you could see a lot of weeds/algae? in the water. I'm not sure how deep the water is, I plan to go back with my kayak and probe it for depth. I think to hunt it successfully you would need to either bring your own blind or get a tule seat low in the reeds. There's not much cover.. There's no room to get a boat in there but you could drag a canoe or kayak in if you needed/wanted too. There's a lot of agriculture in the area.. corn, alfalfa, grape vineyards, etc. So I think it could be a successful place for the wayward duck, goose or even dove flying over. It's also entirely likely that this place could completely dry up by the end of September.. I went to look for Pond 5 and there was no pond... If you look closely in the pictures you can see the car above the reeds. I was trying to show the distance from the pond to the parking area. The pond is really long so even if there are other hunters there it would be possible to get away from them, you would just have to walk pretty far so I recommend bringing a wagon or cart if you have one. Having trouble uploading pictures..
