Hi guys,

I just get draw for an antlerless tag for Stansburry and I am looking for someboddy to go with.
This way we could split the gas/food

Also I am mainly a traditional bowhunter but I might take a rifle the last day

Let me know if you are interested I live in Orange County

Good luck! Should be a fun hunt...is Butterfield canyon in the Stansbury unit? I hear there is a decent herd in there. You could stay motel it in Tooele or Herriman to hunt it if Butterfield is part of that unit.

I'd call at least 2-3 different resources over at the fish and game here in UT. For a cow hunt, they'll give you good leads. I've heard Butterfield Canyon (Oquir range) has a herd but it may not be the biggest herd in that area--it's also popular which may or may not be a good thing. If there's a herd in the Stansbury's I'm not sure where it is 'cause I didn't find elk sign when I hunted deer there back in 2002 or 2003 on the west side of the range.

I just get a map from the are and as you say I 'll try to call DFG and locals and of course I am trying to stay in shape...

Do you have any early snow storm up there?

Cedar City is 3 hrs south of your antlerless unit. You need to find out where the elk are, pick one of those spots for your camp and hunt and go for it. I have no clue about that unit for elk other than that one canyon I've heard about--I'm not sure if that canyon is in the stansbury antlerless elk unit or not.

Call the number below--they didn't put an asteric next to that hunt in the front of the proclamation but this is what was in the back in the unit description section:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
This hunt is comprised of all or largely private property. Hunters should acquire written permission from the landowner before applying for this hunt. USGS 1:100,000 Maps: Tooele, Rush Valley. Boundary questions? Call DWR Springville office, (801) 491-5678.[/b]

They might take sympathy on you since they messed up during printing and try to put you in touch with landowners or on a little slice of public where you have a chance.

wmidbrook, isnt the stansbury where we went hiking with your dog? If I remember right we did cut a few elk tracks in the snow. Not a lot but a couple.

Yeah, we cut a couple tracks on the western side of the Stansbury's. I hadn't hunted there since 2002 so it's possible some elk are on that side now....but, that wasn't a whole lot of sign...I'd prefer to hunt cows where they are really, really trying to thin them out in an area with sign practically everywhere.

Here's a couple quick search results from Google:
http://www.kennecott.com/pdf/kuc_enviro_update_2002_2.pdf
http://www.beactivetooele.org/Hiking_Trail...t_Overlook.html

Sounds to me like you'd be better off in the Oquirrs...I'd still call that Fish and Game number I gave you to get a better idea...most of the elk could be on Kennicot lands or something like that...you can get into serious problems if you trespass on their lands...maybe hunting land bordering theirs might be the way to go. Like I said...that's a pure guess 'cause I haven't scouted nor heard where up or off of Butterfield might be decent....but, given the warning in the proclamation, most elk are on private.
