So now that most of us have received our booklets, where are you guys putting in. I think i'm going to try and get one of the antlerless elk tags for Grizzly Island.
I usually put my hunt info sheet up on a wall, blindfold myself, and throw a dart until I hit an elk hunt...
Seriously, the cow tags are the best bet to draw a CA elk tag at some point.
Many will never draw a bull tag in their lives with the over 500 applicants in the max point pool putting in for 1 rifle tag on some bull elk hunts, it's lookin' bleak.
I will be putting in for the del norte bull hunt and the old dad mt. sheep hunt. I know they are long shots but somebody has to win. Oh , I also put in for likely tables antelope and x zone deer. I keep looking at x3b know I could get a tag but I think Iam going to hold out for my favorite X zone.
I'm going to stick with my long odds bull elk in Owens Valley even though there's a chance at a monster bull in NE CA--I know of a 396" bull harvested that was featured in one of the huntin' magazines. I just can't justify spending $10k+ for a Tule elk tag somewhere in my quest to get my elk slam. I just don't think any hunt in the US should cost more than a few grand. If I were born rich, I might think otherwise. I just grew up around country folk who believed that huntin's "free" and that only fools pay...I don't quite buy into that now given changing times, but it sure influences what I think is a fair price to pay for huntin'.
Hit the jack pot back in 96. My partner and I drew the Bishop Bull Elk tags. Both took fine bulls. Been putting in for Del Norte since them, may try the Owens Archery this year and an archery X zone for deer.
I'm looking at Grizzly Island antlerless again this year. Not like I'll probably draw, but I'm meat hunting on this one. I've got another bull hunt in CO in October anyway.
