Why are pigs rollers?

Of all the animals I've shot only pigs roll to the bottom of the dayum hill every time. ig-laughing: Is it because they are round and able to roll good or is it their last "screw you" to the hunter?

Why can't they just flop over like a deer? I've seen hogs roll and cartwheel down hundreds of yards on a ridge. Over brush, rocks, trees, whatever.

well,with the newly imposed copper regulation, i would no longer call them "rollers"

Where you got to see one to shoot ????? that is what i would like to know... I dont care if they roll, tumble, flop, drop, walk, crawl, and whatever else comes to your mind. :smiley_green_with_e

Those pigs are just 4-legged barrels... The fat ones roll the fastest!

They also seem to love to run downhill after they've been shot, just to make sure they start rolling once they go down!

I rarely seem to spot 'em ABOVE a ledge of any sort. Makes finding them easier, just look for the steepest nastiest hillsides where you can't even see the bottom :skeered:

Hatchet may have a point. I haven't shot a pig yet with copper or my new Etips to see what they do. Many say they run now

My goodness; the badmouthing of copper. Hit 'em in the ten ring and they go down like you flip a switch. I've killed and seen killed a LOT of hogs and very few went any distance and most dropped in their tracks with food in their mouths. These aren't little 75 lb. sows either. I HAVE had Accubonds bounce off, I HAVE had Sierras blow up, but the copper stuff (Barnes) has done it's job.

also,unfortunatly the "couple" that i have seen ,have been tortured while even "10
ringed" with the junk. just opinion bud, and i'll be bashing copper as long as i am "mandated' to use it,bottom line is,do the best you can to make a clean shot,
and brush up on your tracking skills,as many people are using these skills more

Why are pigs rollers?A friend used 30cal 180 grain Nosler E Tips blems on a 250 lb pig and stopped it.I'm going to reload some 30-06 brass with 150gr etips and see how they'll perform in my garand,my sako,15" TC Encore pistol & then I'll make up some loads using 180gr & 150gr for my Sako 300wm.

I personally think it's just their last "screw-you" attempt. And if they don't have a steep hill to roll down they stagger into the middle of the nearest poison oak patch to kick the bucket. The real pissy ones roll all the way to the bottom and INTO a poison oak patch!

I shot a hog behind the ear on top of a flat hilltop. He dropped like he was pole-axed, his brains leaking out the hole in the side of his head. I took the time to set some stuff down, take off my pack, and take a slug of water before walking over there. Then, just as I walked up, the dirty scoundrel started flopping... right over a ledge and tumbled a couple hundred feet down a steep wash.

It's all a conspiracy, I tell ya!

They only roll down hill if there is no road on the bottom........otherwise they get hung up on every tree trunk and bush before rolling to the road. Just my experience.

I've see the copper work if you hit a lot of bone, but as for soft tissue they just pass thru and the pig keeps running.

Oh, I don't take it personal; after all, that's why there are so many different bullets, cartridge choices, powders, guns etc. And, as you well know confidence in your load is not an inconsiderable factor in knocking a hog down. The bottom line for me is that if I do my part, the bullet will do it's and I'll have meat on the hook.

I am going with the last screw you! They might be trying........ what is that smell?..... Is that sausage? Who cares let em roll. It helps to burn a few calories in preparation for all that wonderful sausage.

Most pigs that I've shot on tend to kick and flop around before giving up the ghost. If they were shot near or on a hillside slope, all the kicking and flopping will make em say "adios to you and canyon bottom here I come". A deer usually don't flop around when its whole body is down on the ground.

About copper bullets I've not lost a hog with it yet, but have only been using them since last July. My only reason against copper bullets is $50+ per box vs. $12.99 per box of Federal Powershok at Walmart.

There are several reasons why hogs are rollers:

1. Short leg length
2. Short body length
3. Significant weight to length ratio; a lot of weight in a small package
4. Incredible density and body mass
5. Favorable body shape and compact structure
6. Vindictive nature of the hog to screw you to the very end

It is all of these reasons that make them a pain to drag, too.

one last thought on copper, I've killed 2 pigs with 45 gr barnes tsx, one bullet stayed inside, the other blew a quarter sized hole out the other side, neither pig went more than 10 yds so my guess is that we need to downsize to keep the energy inside the animal
