Fellow Hog hunters does anyone know of an association similar to 'ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK FOUNDATION, NATIONAL WILD TURKEY ASSOC., DUCKS UNLIMITED, etc. for Wild boar....Maybe that is what we need to help keep in check our California dept. of fish and game and to increase our hunting opportunities....lets make our voices heard....give me some feedback....Pappy (Don Hesselein, Oroville, Ca.)

This subject comes up now and again and has been discussed at length... there are some issues surrounding pigs and game/habitat management that don't apply to other big game animals, most noteably that pigs are a non-native and destructive species which don't really need "management". Most environmental groups (i.e., Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, Nature Conservancy) would actually like to see wild pigs eradicated altogether.

That said, check this thread... the germane content begins on the 2nd page.

Backcountry thanks for the history of this subject...Dont know about anyone else, but, I have written the Governor quite a few times ,via Email, on various different subjects...only the generic response via email, stating thanks for your correspondence...never any real response...Even contacted the CADFG , as many of you have, with the response, We werent asked about an increase, and if we were asked, we would have voted against it....Something has to be done to make the state responsible to inform us voters (hunters) where our monies are going...increases in fees (hunting, driving, etc.) over time is acceptable, however 900% in a year is absurd, but, it is happening....thanks for listening and enlightening me......Pappy

ps. I was born and raised in Redwood city...lived there for 28 years, raised on eigth ave. lived on 9th, and off jefferson, til I moved to san jose in 1978..then to Oroville in 1999

Pappy, you're not the only one that's a bit miffed at this increase in fees... heck, Rifleman was averaging about 30 pigs per year! This increase is gonna hit him pretty hard. Me? I would get a book of 5 tags per year and I was happy if I filled a single tag... most folks are somewhere in the middle... still, that don't make it right. My suggestion, since you seem to have the inclination to keep working on this, is try to get a hold of one of the DFG bigwigs and get a straight answer from them... e.g., How did this increase get added to the budget? What was the justification? How are these monies benefiting pig hunters and/or pig habitat?... I can't wait to hear the answer to that... my guess is that my $15.00 is going to help Latrecia and her crack babies. Is there any way to go back to the old fee schedule? Etc... If you find out anything, please post up and let us know.

As for RWC... I too live just off Jefferson, but near Alameda de las Pulgas. Bet it's changed a bit since you were here. Heck, back in 1978 there were still fruit orchards between each city on the Penninsula... now it's solid urban sprawl from south of San Jose all the way into Marin County... you ain't missing nothing, 'cept maybe some fine Mexican food. I've got several favorite taquirias to choose from within about 2 miles.... mmm-mmm-good!

By the way... belated welcome to JHO!

A hog hunting organization might be helpful.

Oroville..... amazing. My dad was in the Civilian Conservation Corps way back about 1940 or so and was in a camp at Belden, up on the Feather River. He used to ride the rails from Belden into Oroville, then thumb a ride down to the L.A. area to visit family, thumb back up north and again ride the rails back to Belden.

Cheers,

Carl

Belden, a beautiful place to camp along the Feather River.

Hogs, a non-management animal??????????? DFG doesn't miss
a beat in getting their hands out getting money anyway they can
even if it's unscrupulous. It is just like the U.S Forest Service
attacking one outdoor user group down in the Kern River drainage
to get a user fee in place to pay for other things that wouldn't benefit
the group they're extorting the fee from!
