There are getting to be a bunch of wild boars running around this area and several guys are trying to get rid of them before they root up all the habitat.
They have been finding when they wipe out an entire family group, there are generally 80% females in the group. This includes all the adults, juveniles and piglets in the herd.
Is this the normal sex ratio for these things? What happens to the other males assuming they start out 50/50?
Do some of the big males live solitary lives except for breeding? Do the males kill some of the piglets (especially the immature males)?
Any info about there biology is appreciated.

I'm no expert...but when i see a group of hogs while hunting, i'm usually certain there will not be a 'trophy' boar in the group. The larger dominant boars i've shot have been alone & cruising. Typically the groups of hogs i see hold a few boars, but they tend to be juvenile ones.

What I've noticed is that the herds you see are generally a few large sows with a smaller boar or two and a bunch of juvenile (1-75lb) hogs. The larger boars tend to be solitary and wander sow to sow fighting off the smaller hogs and breeding their women.

I've had the same experiance as AS and EvBouret. I've taken about 12 hogs and only 2 have been boars, and yep they were by themselves. I do think that most herds hold more sows then boars. I hunt a large track of private property around Lake Sonoma, and it seems like when we take a hog out of a group it's a sow, and most of the boars have been taken when they were alone.

We have been using multiple game cameras for about 6 or 7 months on our place. As everyone has said before, typically the larger boars are by themselves. The most hogs we have gotten in a single pic was 31. There appeared to be 7 sows and 24 piglets in the bunch. We have also recently seen a bachelor group of 6 young boars, maybe 75-100lbs, running together consistently over the last few weeks.
