Unbelievable. I know that area well, I lived in Poway for about 10 years, and know where those pigs were released. I cannot believe how far and what country they have covered in such a short amount of time. This actually changes the way I think about hogs spreading from the original release area.

6" tusk hugh. Not only do we have hogs in San Diego, now we have world record hogs! I love how reporters refuse to research the content of their article. There is no such thing as a Russian hog, Eurasian yes but not Russian. Oh well, I guess misinformation from the press is nothing new.

I have driven to Julian(apple orchard country) and the lush, green hillsides definitely can support decent hog populations...............won't be long before we have ranches in San Diego opening up for "guided/pay to hunts" just like in the Central Coast. Lots of stock water troughs in the area for their horses and cows..............which the hogs need badly. The next question is...............any accessible BLM land in the area??? I mean accessible from the road without going through some easement which a lot of property owners disrespect. Lush greenery and stock water tanks all over the area.....the hogs are going to be everywhere...........I mean everywhere.

I'm afraid there are enough public land hunters down here, myself included, to keep the public land take to about 3% just like the rest of the state.

If they ever make it up to the Julian area we will definitely have a permanent hog population. Not all, but most of the ideal hog habitat in San Diego county is private land, or one of the many indian reservations.

I talked to a buddy out hunting the hogs down there and he said their are so many people it's like opening day during turkey season.

In a couple years MCC will be charging even more for their membership!

Was out in an 'ole deer honey hole of mine right before archery season ended and ran into a sheriff that was patrolling between Julian and Lake Cuyamaca. It was lunch time so my partner and I chatted with the sheriff for awhile - he said the hogs are there, they occasionally get hit by vehicles and come out at night all the time. I don't believe wild pigs mulitply as much as people think (I believe they produce about 2/3 litters a year), but even at that rate, the hunting opportunities should increase accordingly in a couple of years. It takes really good conditions for hogs to reproduce 2 or 3 times a year. As arid as San Diego is I doubt that's possible on an average year. Some of the orchards around Julian could provide really great conditions though.

Additionally we have the added challenge of hogs getting past the mountain lions and coyotes, not that they don't deal with these problems throughout most of the state. I just think we have exceptional populations of predators down here.

I think if they become established on a few large ranches that actually want them there then we'll be good to go but all the hunting pressure they are sure to receive on public land makes me think it will be a while before they are well established down here.

I'd like to know what our local biologist, Mr. Botta, thinks about the hogs....

Either that or her husband has been telling her for years that it's 8+ inches....

I am a MCC member and we do not have any signs of Wild Hogs on the property as of last Deer Season.ig-laughing:

However, saying that does not mean that they are not near? :hog chewing:

I will be scouting for Turkey soon, so it should be interesting....

Can't say I've ever had a hog sneak up behind me. That sure would make hunting them easier though!
