i am new to the hunting pig with a bow, i have hunted up in shasta county where i grew up for many years but i feel i am at my wits end here in the bay area with no hunting out side my front door.

so i am now looking for any help from people that are activley hunting the hollister area with results as far as seeing some pigs or better, taking some home.
i am not above using a guide but i like the 1 on 1 better.
any help would be greatly appreciated. :JHP rocks:

Howdy Pigpig, and welcome to JHO.

You're asking a tough question, for two reasons.

First, success on any public lands is fairly "rare". There are hogs out there, but when it comes to hunters, they're probably some of the most educated hogs in the world.

Secondly, my guess is that NOBODY is going to give a reasonably close tip on any spot where they have had success. If you get a honey hole on public land, you better keep it to yourself unless you like showing up to find the area overrun with hunters. Word gets around, and if only one person tells one other... well, you probably get the idea.

There are good public lands about two hours from your location (San Mateo), but you're not likely to get too many folks to give you hints about good areas. You may hear things like, Clear Creek, Condon Peak, or Laguna Mountain... but those are all fairly big areas and you'll be sorely disappointed if you expect to just show up and find pigs (or you'll be extraordinarily lucky!).

My suggestion is to get some BLM maps from the Hollister office and do some homework. Then pack your bow and a backpack and start shredding some boot leather.

Otherwise, you'd be a lot better off to find a good guide who can take you on private land. If you really want to take a pig, this is definitely your best bet.

Good hunting, and wish I could give you something a little more specific.

Thank you for your input!
you responded exactly the way i thought you would, I was just wishing that some one would give up a honey hole can’t blame a guy for trying.
But I just talked to my sister up in railroad flat and she has a couple of co-workers up in Avery that have seen some pigs down on a couple of forest service roads I think I will go and have a look maybe things will work out there.
I will let you know what I find; we all can use more areas to hunt

Nope, definitely can't blame you for asking. Shoot, who knows... may not be long before we're asking you the same question.

"Hey, Pigig, where'd ya shoot that hog?"

Good luck in Avery (or wherever), and let us know how you do! Take pictures, for those of us who once had honey holes, but shared them and are left with nothing but footprints and cigarette butts.
