Here is a wild pig from my October trip to the island of St. Lucia. I did glass up 3 other pigs while on the island. This one was wild then they caught it, put a collar and rope on it to keep it close by for the big island Holiday on December 13th, too bad the pig broke free but at least he still feeds close by. When the holiday comes the owner/hunter said they will have to get the dogs on it quick before someone else does, all wild pigs are free game. For the holiday they each butcher their own cows, pigs and goats for a huge island BBQ for all to share.
I tried to line up a pig hunt with one of the locals but could not fit it in my plans. Sounded like a lot of fun, hunting pigs with little dogs then spear it or knife it and no hunting license needed. The wild pigs are black or dark brown and the boars have very small tusks, their domestic pigs look just like the pigs here in the states. I did show him one of my boars from Tejon and he said that is too big for them to hunt, I think the 3” tusk and 215lbs field dressed was a little scary for him and the dogs. The island is thick jungle with lots of plants that can cut you like a razor daylight is a must; they also hunt them during the day due to the Fer de lance snake which will kill you in about 10 minutes and comes out only at night. The locals love the meat due to their diet of tropical fruit and nuts that grow wild on the island. If you do go to the island make sure you look up on the internet “Joe knows St. Lucia” before you go and book a tour for the first day your there, he really does know St. Lucia and gives you all the info you need to have a great trip……...like nothing is open on Sunday, and every radio station on the island plays old country music all day Sunday; I can’t remember the last time I heard Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonk” on vinyl, of course I’m not a country music fan. Then when you get there ask some of the staff at the resort and you’ll find someone that has a relative that hunts pigs.
“No pressure, No problem” is the universal saying for everything……really friendly people that love to have fun, they all have a great attitude and very quick witted. Also with 7 women for every man…..truly a mans world over there. They all speak English and Caribbean Creole so communication is easy.
