I've been a member of Wilderness Unlimited for several years and have been quite happy up until about 6 months ago. The hunting on their private ranches has gone downhill, particularly in the south half of California, but that's the way it is and I can accept that. But what has really concerned me is that it has become so hard to get a reservation on the better ranches and what totally pissed me off is what they did to me today, and I hope the higher-up's at WU read this, because in the past, I have been one of their strongest supporters. Two weeks ago, I scheduled a hog hunt at Cummings Ranch in Tehachapi for Friday through Sunday, May 21-23. My arrival at the ranch was scheduled for around 8:00 PM on Thursday. I was given full clearance and everything was cool. This afternoon after work I packed my truck with all my gear---a 2 hour affair since I'll be camping out---and I planned to leave for Tehachapi directly from work on Thursday afternoon, which is tomorrow. I was really looking forward to the hunt. 15 minutes ago---at 5:15 PM CA time, I got a call from WU. They informed me that the ranch was going to be closed on Saturday and that I could hunt on Friday only. To top it off, they said that I might have to leave the ranch on Friday evening. It's a 4 1/2 hour drive home. So, as of now, my 3 day-hunt is a one day hunt and I will be driving 4 1/2 hours Thursday evening, hunting all day Friday, and driving home on Friday evening, arriving home sometime around midnight or even later.

I paid $1300 bucks for this year's dues and this is my only hunt so far this year. I made it absolutely clear to WU that I have had it with them. For all you readers who are considering joining WU, you might want to do a thorough investigation before joining, just to make sure that things are really the way the salesperson tells you they are.

I'm so PO'd right now that I can hardly sit still long enough to write this.

Adios.

I'm glad you posted your issues with WU, I'm inactive right now and was thinking of going back to active next year. May have to think twice about this until they get their act together. I use to work for WU, and I know there's a couple of guys there that frequent this site. One of those guys and myself actually told one of the owners how his name get's hammered on this site really hard, he could care less. He's not the head guy, but he's up there pretty high. As long as he's in the loop, I don't things will change much unless people just start dropping out of the club. I don't know who you talked to at WU, but you may want to contact Rick Copeland and tell him your concerns, he's the main man at WU. If he can't, or won't make it strait then it will never get fixed.

If you have had any other issues with WU, please email me so I can make up my mind on going back active or not.

Thanks,

I picked up a little flyer at the local Texaco here in Corcoran about a year ago. My hunting buddy and I were talking about it and then I read a few different problems with them on this site. My mind is changed for good now. 1300 could of paid for a whole lot more then a hog hunt. You should call the guy Mel is talking about and (nicely) vent your frustration with him.

That an interesting story. I am also hunting Cummings Ranch this weekend on Saturday and Sunday via WU. Nobody has notified me of a ranch closure for 5/22.

You'd better call WU ASAP. The ranch will be closed down on Saturday because the owner is putting on some sort of a charity event, something for cancer, I was told. A noble cause, certainly, but if you drive all the way there and they tell you to turn around and go home, that's going to be somewhat irritating. Please post what they tell you when you call. Thanks.

Doccherry,

I believed a similar thing happened to Nofear on the Los Gatos property and he go switched over to the Palm property. I hated when things happened like that. Why not have them move you to another property like the Rinconada which is about the same drive for you? Infact I think the Rinconada property is a better property than Cummings. Although I killed one pig out of Cummings and saw several others, the property is not one I would consider doing anymore pig hunt on.

Rinconada is booked and Palm was offered to me, but I declined. I've taken pigs off Palm, but during the last 2 years I've made several trips there and haven't seen a single hog. It used to be a very good ranch but the hogs seemed to have relocated. I'm still going up to Cummings and hope to get in a late hunt tonight and hunt all day tomorrow. Hopefully they'll let me stay Friday night if I promise to be gone by sunrise Saturday, otherwise it's a long drive home Friday night. I'm curious what hdsts has to say. If he drives up there and is told he can't hunt, I imagine he won't be too happy. Then again, if they say he can hunt on Saturday I will be a lot less than happy and the fur will fly. I'll keep you guys posted.

I got the call this afternoon, they offered Palm but I declined also. I tried Rinconda and Scheller and both were booked so I settled for Cummings on Sunday. I was told I could go in after 3:00 on Saturday but had to stay in camp until Saturday at midnite. I will go and camp Saturday nite and hunt Sunday all day. Doc if your still around on Saturday or Sunday I will be driving an late 70's Powerwagon doning Mossy Oak paint, look me up.

That is tough. I have seen your earlier posts and you definitely were a huge supporter. I am a member and have never had any problems...but rather than stir up a hornets nest saying good things about the club I will keep my mouth shut.

Let us all know what WU did when you voiced your concerns to whoever is in charge...that will show a lot about what they are all about.

How did you do at Cummings on Sunday? Get anything or see anything? Hope you had fun, even though your hunt was cut short.

Bwana it cost couple grand 1st year.about twelve hundred after that.

Doc: I hunted the eastside around the pond and up above that area first,
saw some old sign and some big cat prints there. I then talked with the patrol and he pointed me in the direction that he saw them last weekend. We went up looking in that area that backs up to the northside of Tejon and spent about 3 hours scouting but didnt see anything other than big cat prints again and some real fresh deer tracks. How did you do? When did you leave? We showed up about 5:00 on Saturday and spent the night.

Did you guys check out the oak canyon with two running creeks on the eastside just down below the pond? Down by where two creeks comes together is where I killed my hog a couple years ago. With this dry weather, I would assumed hogs would be concentrating near the creek under those shaded oak trees.

I hunted the whole ranch, walking the creek bottoms up by the pond, going up into the high country on the Tower Road, the far west end, and the cultivated field alongside the highway, near camp. I found fresh sign along the cultivated field and along the far west end. The caretaker had seen quite a few hogs in the field but I didn't see a thing. The creek bottoms had no tracks at all. The weather was beautiful and I had the ranch to myself. Left at 6:00 AM Saturday. Will try Rinconada and Scheller during archery season. Both of those ranches are really nice.
