STEP OUTSIDE® Story, Photo Winners

Contest gives outdoors enthusiasts a venue for sharing experiences, winning prizes

NEWTOWN, Conn.—Frustrated over constant noise from the neighbor kids’ dirt bikes, Stephen Carpenteri of Dallas, Ga., came up with a brilliant solution: He offered the youngsters an invitation to join him at a local hunter education class. Far more effective than simply complaining, Carpenteri’s invitation not only diverted the boys’ attention away from noisy machines, it also led to a rewarding and longlasting friendship.

Carpenteri’s story took first-place honors and a $1,000 gift certificate in the 2003 STEP OUTSIDE® Story and Photo Contest. The first-place photo, submitted by Ernest Frappier of Herkimer, N.Y., depicted Frappier giving shooting instruction to a young boy. Both winning entries can be viewed at http://www.stepoutside.org.

Cyndi Dalena, national coordinator of the STEP OUTSIDE program, is now seeking entries for the 2004 contest. She says everyone who has introduced a newcomer—or who’s been introduced—to shooting, hunting, fishing or archery, is eligible and encouraged to participate.

“Stories and photos will be judged on how well they illustrate the STEP OUTSIDE theme of outdoor enthusiasts inviting newcomers to the outdoor sports,” said Dalena. “Quality time with family and friends is important, and, as last year’s contest winners discovered, a simple invitation can bring people together.”
