Winter Elk Viewing Underway At Hardware Ranch

Hyrum -- Recent snowfall has caused the elk to make an early appearance at the Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area east of Hyrum this year.

About 350 elk are on the WMA's feeding area and more will follow as the winter season progresses. Some smaller bulls are in the herd and the big ones are expected to arrive soon.

Sleigh rides that provide visitors a closeup view of the elk began operating the first weekend in December.

Starting Dec. 15, all of the WMA's facilities will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Cost for the sleigh rides is $5 for those 9 years old and older, and $3 for those 4 to 8 years old. Ages 3 and under ride for free. Reservations are not required.

The Hardware Ranch visitor center offers great educational opportunities through interactive exhibits about local wildlife. Beginning Dec. 15, the visitor center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Division of Wildlife Resources staff will be available to answer questions and provide information.

The WMA's restaurant will also open Dec. 15, serving a variety of meals and offering a night sleigh ride/dinner combo. Reservations are required for the night ride/dinner. Call (435) 753-6168 for more information or to make reservations.

The visitor center and sleigh rides will be in operation Dec. 25 from noon to 5 p.m., and will also operate Christmas Eve and New Years Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Hardware Ranch WMA can be reached by traveling 15 miles east of Hyrum on SR-101. Follow the signs to the management area.
