Woman kills bear during deer hunt in Perry County.

Columbus Dispatch.

NEW LEXINGTON, Ohio -- State wildlife officials won't know until later today how many deer were killed on opening day, but they already have a count on the number of bears: one.

And that's one more than should have been shot, said Vicki Mountz, spokeswoman for the Ohio Division of Wildlife.

A woman shot the 2-year-old male bear yesterday while she was hunting with her 11-year-old son in the Wayne National Forest in Perry County, Mountz said. The woman's name was not available yesterday.

The incident is being investigated, but the woman apparently feared that the bear, estimated to weigh between 185 and 200 pounds, was charging.

State wildlife officials say there are as many as 50 black bears in Ohio, and although the number of sightings has increased in recent years, it is illegal to kill them. The animal is on the state's endangered- species list.
