What type of notice do they give you for the orientation? Just found out I won this tag. Thinking of doing the Carrizo/Chimineas area for the hunt. Good idea or is the private land the way to go?

I've done out of state elk hunts but feel clueless for this one since I didn't expect to draw it after 8 years of points! I need to start scouting!

We see them on public every time we go out... which is usually a couple of times a month.

Pretty sure those archery tags are new for this year. For a rifle hunter, you're nuts to pay for private for a cow. They are easily accessible on the public areas at Carrizo Plain. For archery, it might be different. Carrizo is very open grassland, not much cover. More like antelope habitat than your typical elk habitat. However, water is limited so there are specific water tanks they have to use. If you can set up on one of those, it might be easy.
I'd ask the biologist what the rules are for archery hunting there.

I would check the status of the hunt since 80,610 acres have burned there, currently 62% containment. Someone posted that the burn scar is 15 miles long!
