I have never liked the weight of wool but have loved it for most every other reason. Keep an eye on Sportsmansguide as they have lots of military style wool products that go on sale. I haven't had a pair on a while but I found your basic military wool pants do great. I have worn them in 80-90 weather without getting overheated. I find the wool to be a bit better if your somewhat soaked in the very cold. If your wet and it is that cold you are screwed unless you get to a warm place.make a fire or at least dry out the gear some.
I have had a Swandri ultimate jacket for a decade and use it a layer or two in single digits. It is very HEAVY but bombproof and man is it warm. Shooting a bow with arm guards is tricky with it but otherwise I love it
