i've been out hog hunting 3 times now. the first time was with 3 other freinds in paso robles we took 2 hogs home, it was in febuaury the ground was moist and the ranch we we're on had alot of water on the ranch. i've been out twice sense then in april and may, the ranches i was on we're really nice i mean rolling grass hills with oak trees all over the ranch, only thing missing was water i mean the ground was so dry it was like desert land. how important and how far do you think hogs will travel to water? also does anyone know what time of year oak trees droop their acorns? any help would be apreciated.

When things get dry hogs won't stray too far from water. I know that at Camp Roberts some of the hogs will bed in the river bottom just yards from the river. Most of the hogs shot there are shot by the river. If you can find even a small water hole you have a good shot at finding hogs.

Yup, no water no hogs. Hogs have to water every day. I would think they would rather bed up and feed somewhere close to water. They will travel, but not huge huge distances, especially when the temps start getting up there. How far is the closest water that you know of?

Hogs can cover 15 miles in a night. Like the guys have said no water no hogs. Look for any source of water in the area. Check for tracks and wallows. Acorns hit the ground in late September then the hogs suck them up. Now they are on a diet of grasses. They even like the wild flowers. You won't find much rooting now. When its hot the hogs will sometimes move to water mid day.

Good Hunting,
