The toms out where I hunt have been extremely quiet of late. I was out Sunday with a friend, he hunted I called, and not a thing answered back. Then I went out for my second on Monday and the same deal, saw a few jakes, but all was quiet. Yesterday I put a fairly large tom to roost, it is just begining to rain lightly. I sure hope the ole boy cooperates this morning and does it quickly.

They never cooperate the way that we want them to. I set up very early this morning, about 100-125 yds to the toms left from his roosting spot. He began gobbling just at first light (still on roost) I waited awhile and then let off a few short and quiet yelps. He roared back with a long loud gobble. I waited and did the same thing and this went on for about 10-12 minutes. Then the hens flew down, they were to his right about 75-100 yds. He was right behind them shortly. They worked their way all the way down to the bottom of the field (about 350-400 yds. He still gobbled as he strutted near them. I kept the yelps up, but more frequent and he kept gobbling back. 2 1/2 hrs later he had ushered the hens somewhat in my direction, but over the ridge from me on the tree line. I could hear him drumming just over the ridge as he gobbled. The hens were not vocal at all so I couldnt mimmick them to try and get them to come in closer. He never came over that ridge, and I packed out at 0830 and headed offf to work, cold, wet, and an unfilled second tag. He's a nice bird with a longbeard. I hope to kill him sunday or monday. More rain tomorrow, and suppose to be alot of it, so I dont think I will set up on him in the morning.
