All I was the lucky winner of the WU sponsored pig hunt raffeled away at the last DFG advanced hunting clinic down at the Tejon ranch this summer, I live in the bay area and i am trying to figure out which WU property would be my best choice for this hunt.

So any advice you WU members might have will be VERY appreciated, this is for riffle hunting.

thanks in advance and safe hunting.

Hopefully B-RAD, another SF based hunter who is a member of WU, will chime in (I'll let him know). I am not a member of WU so I can't really offer any advice other than welcome to JHO and it's good to see another hunter who lives in SF, there aren't many of us. I can tel you he has only hunted 2 or 3 WU ranches for pigs and is o-fer at this point. Hopefully you will get some good advice

Hi Bigtusker, i am *NOT* a WU member but WU and Tejon ranch each gave one "pig hunt" as raffle prizes for the DFG's advanced pig hunting clinics and i was fortunate enough to win the one sponsored by WU, so I am trying to find out which property is the "HOT" one ;-)

and BDB you would be suprised how many hunters acctually reside in SF, I have a handfull of friends that are avid hunters and live in the city...its one of those things, people dont bring it up in conversation in large parts (IMHO) because they are concerned about what other people think. I have found that when I bring up hunting as my main hobby and explain the conservationist side of the equesion and my creed of using all parts of the animals i kill for food then people by and large accept hunting.

anyway just my 02$

Been a WU member for a while. Taken a pig at Willow Creek and seen them several times. Seen pigs at Circle V, but got stoopid and didn't shoot. I have not been to a wide variety of ranches, so my info is limited.

Most of the ranches will shut down for use at the end of January. A few will be open until turkey season starts. I think everything closes as far as pig hunting until spring turkey season is over. They open back up for May and close until August.

Hill is a nice ranch. My other half saw pigs there but for myself, the pigs did a better job of hiding than I did of looking for them.

Do not take a vehicle with a nice paint job to Willow Creek.

Hope this helps a bit.

I suppose the number of SF hunters you know depends on your group of friends. I'm an entirely self-taught hunter (no one in my family hunts), and I don't personally know a single other hunter that lives in SF. However, SF is a pretty big city with a very diverse population, so I'm not that surprised to learn that there are good numbers of hunters living in SF.

As for the level of acceptance I get from friends, most of them respond to my 'moral hypocracy' argument pretty well. I believe that if you eat meat, but are against hunting, you are being hypocritical. Every time you buy a pork chop from Safeway, you are indirectly contributing to the death of that animal. I personally believe that as meat eaters we have a responsibility to be aware of the ramifications of eating meat. If you don't hunt, visit a slaughterhouse. If you are unable to accept what goes on, don't eat meat - I'll be the first to congratulate you. But for God's sake don't bash people who have the fortitude to harvest and process their own meat. For this reason I am only willing to intelligently debate anti-hunters that are also strict vegetarians. If you eat meat but are against hunting, don't waste my time.

I am a WU member and have taken pigs at both Cummings Ranch and Benz Ranch which are in Techachapi. Benz Ranch borders Tejon on one side.....imagine that, they have pigs. Cummings shares a small stretch of border with Benz Ranch. I recently went to Cummings for a quail hunt and saw plenty of pig sign but saw no pigs. I have not been to Benz for a while but plan on going soon. I do see most of my animals at last light on both ranches....

Hope this may help a little and good luck. Oh yea, post the results

I'm an inactive W.U. member, but have hunted several properties for pigs. If you live in S.F, Spy Rock is suppose to be pretty good and should be close to you. If you archery hunt, there H & E is a good bet. Then there's Hill Ranch, Gallatin and Los Gatos creek, I would go with Hill Ranch, only hunted it twice, seen hogs both times.

Good luck
