Looking to try my luck for spring pig. Since my days off are during the week, these are the two closest ranches I'm gonna be able to hunt. Anyone been to either of these ranches?

Thanks,
Tim

Didn't know WU had ranches with such names. Are those new properties?

I'm heading out to River Ridge myself for the first time in a couple weeks for the opener of Turkey. According to the February WU newsletter, River Ridge and Shannon aren't open for Spring pig, so I'm not sure where you're getting that info from.

Cummings, Benz, and Willow Creek are all open right now until the end of April, so if you need a fix before May when Spring pig opens on the other ranches, these are worthwhile. Cummings and Benz of course are the closest if you live in So Cal., but you gotta hike your arse off to get a chance.

Good luck Vaquero.

I take that back. I just looked through my February Flyer and saw the two ranches on the list of properties. Apparently WU indicated no pigs on those two ranches.

You guys are right, I musta been too tired when I was looking at this last night. Unfortunately, anything even remotely close to me is only open for one of the days I have off since my days off are during the week. I really don't feel like driving all that way to get in one day of hunting.

I'm thinkin' I'll just cancel my membership and write it off as a dumb mistake since I can never get on any of the properties unless I take vacation time from work!

Extended winter pig is now thru the end of March. I don't think any ranch is open for pig in April. It seems to be all for turkey hunting. I am headed back to Willow creek tomorrow and Friday.

I just take the days off work without pay. I figure it's cheaper than pschoanalysis and pills.

Jean, pig is still open for Cummings, Benz and Buckeye until the end of April check your newsletter. I went to Willow Creek a few weeks ago when it was raining/snowing and didn't see a thing over two days of hunting. Lots of tracks and scat, but no piggies. Good luck on your trip.

Vaquero, you must have a very tight work schedule, because Cummings and Benz are both open every day except Monday and Tuesday. I've gone there several times this year and it takes me about 2-1/2 hours driving from Temecula. You are probably only an hour away from both of these if you're living in Santa Clarita. Best of luck whatever you decide Vaq.

It's about an hour and a half from where I'm at. And as a matter I have Mon, Tue and Wed off in April and May. I'm on a rotating schedule and didn't realize how badly it would screw me when I signed on. But the limited seasons for pig make it tough.

Vaq,

You're absolutely right about the limited season at WU. I wasn't aware of that either when I signed up, and sometimes like now, it's screwed that most of the good ranches are closed. I realize that WU has to keep the ranches from being over-run by people and from totally ruining a good ranch by over-hunting, but I thought they weren't totally honest in their representation of the facts before I signed, hell, if this was a real estate transaction they would have been sued.

What they need is a better system in place for reservations, and they should also available to all members and any potential members a complete record for every ranch. They need to disclose, not only the kill records, but any other changes in animal populations, habitats that were affected by fires, floods, and anything else that could help or hinder the wildlife.

Only then, after full disclosure could someone make a more informed decision about whether to buy-in or not.

Anyway, if you want to get together and go sometime send me an e-mail. Or, if you want more details about these ranches and others I've hunted I can share that with you in private, instead of sharing those details with the throngs here at JHO.

its not too bad if you can hunt during the week. most of the ranches will open back up in may i think?

it would be nice to have some type of online reservation system, where you can see actual numbers, etc... not necessarily showing members names, but maybe member IDs. sometimes they say so and so ranch is booked everytime you call. seeing different member IDs on the calendar would make it a little easier to understand that your being told the real deal.

Hotload and Bobby, I agree with both of you. I would have liked to see more detailed info before signing up and I would like to see an online reservation system too. They should come up with something on the website that you can click on the ranch you want to hunt and you can view a calendar with blacked out days and how many people have reservations for each day. I would also like to see recent stats for animals taken. It seems like everything is a big secret. I was talking to a guy who has been a member since it staarted...he sure had some stories (and not encouraging ones) of the clubs inner workings. Oh well, I don't think I'll be renewing again next year.

I've always thought it funny that you never could get a strait answer as to how many members there are in the club.

Hotload, what days are you available to hunt? I most certainly would enjoy meeting up with some other members. Maybe that will change my mind. That's another thing I would like to see is a listing of club members online with their location and hunting preferences so you can network better.

Anyways, I gotta spend some more time figuring out what I'm gonna do...hopefully get a hunt in next month and maybe one or two in May. I would like to see several properties before I make up my mind one way or the other.

Thanks for the input fellas....
