CHEYENNE – The draft Wyoming Greater Sage Grouse Conservation Plan is available for review at the Game and Fish Department Web site, G&F regional offices and county libraries.

The plan was accepted by the G&F Commission at their July 25 meeting and advanced for public review. Comments on the plan will be accepted through 5 p.m. Sept. 30 by writing Sage Grouse Plan, WGFD, 5400 Bishop Blvd., Cheyenne, WY 82006 or emailing wgfsagegrouse@wgf.state.wy.us.

All public comments will be reviewed and considered before the plan is presented for final approval to the G&F Commission early next year.

The 71-page plan was developed over the last two years by the Wyoming Sage Grouse Working Group. Eighteen Wyomingites representing agriculture, conservation groups, local governments, government agencies, the Wind River Indian Reservation and mining/energy serve on the group.

The purposes of the conservation plan:
-- Establish the framework necessary for local working groups to guide management efforts directed at halting population declines and maintaining and/or improving sage grouse habitats in Wyoming.

-- Develop Wyoming-based management solutions to sage grouse population declines using Wyoming-based data and research to the extent practical.

-- Provide for coordinated management across jurisdictional or ownership boundaries.

-- Develop the statewide support necessary to halt declines in sage grouse populations and assure healthy sagebrush communities capable of supporting the species in Wyoming.

-- The group is proposing development of local working groups to evaluate sage grouse population needs, sagebrush ecosystem condition, identify limiting factors and guide implementation of on-the-ground conservation strategies.
