Elk antler auction nets $80,000 for Boy Scouts
5/22/02
JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) -- More than 9,700 pounds of shed elk antlers netted $80,656 at the 35rd Annual Jackson Boy Scout Antler Auction.
Of the 9,755 pounds sold, 8,955 pounds were collected on the National Elk Refuge and 800 pounds were provided by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
The average price per pound was $8.27, down from last year's $9.51. The record is $14.07 set in 1989.
The Boy Scouts of America donate 80 percent of the proceeds to elk management, winter elk feeding and the refuge.
Saturday's auction drew 175 bidders from 30 states representing local buyers, Asian markets, western export houses and regional crafts people.
Antlers are used in chandeliers, furniture, knife handles and belt buckles. They are also ground into powder for sale in Asian markets for medicine.
The Boy Scouts collect antlers on the refuge every spring, a tradition dating back to the late 1950s.
