ANTLER HUNTING AND SPRING TURKEY SEASONS DISCUSSED AT PUBLIC MEETINGS

Contact: Jeff Obrecht, WGFS

For Immediate Release

10/18/02

CASPER – Wyoming’s first antler hunting season, spring turkey seasons and depredation hunting seasons for disease management are the regulations being proposed at Game and Fish Department public meetings Oct. 28-30 across the state.

The G&F is proposing an antler hunting season in several hunt areas stretching from Evanston to Pinedale and the Saratoga/Encampment area to help reduce stress to deer, elk and moose by the increasingly popular hobby.

“As antler hunting has become more popular, it has become more competitive with enthusiasts venturing into big game winter ranges earlier each year,” said Terry Cleveland, G&F assistant Wildlife Division chief. “This activity not only causes the animals to expend needed energy at the time of year they are most physiologically stressed, it also can displace the animals to less suitable winter habitat.”

The proposed regulation was developed with public input received from open houses held in May. The closure is defined by deer hunt area boundaries, but applies to hunting antlers and all other body parts of deer, elk and moose.

Deer Hunt Areas ..........................Date and Time of Seasons Closed....Limitations

78,80,81,134,135,168 (Upper Platte Valley/Evanston) Jan. 1 to 8 a.m. May 1.

141,142,143,162 (Big Piney/Upper Green River) Jan. 1 to 8 a.m. May 1. Private lands not closed to antler hunting.

130,138,139,140 (Farson/Pinedale) Jan. 1 to 8 a.m. April 1. Private lands not closed to antler hunting.

Turkey hunting areas 3, 5 and 7 (Sheridan and northern Johnson counties, Campbell County, Kaycee area) are proposed to be combined into one hunt area. Turkey hunting hours would be changed to one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset to correspond with shooting hours for other upland birds. Quotas for areas 6 and 10 in the Bighorn Basin would be increased by five licenses under the proposals.

In addition to occasionally conducting depredation hunting seasons to address damage problems, a proposed regulation would allow the G&F to hold depredation seasons to address a disease problem. Under this proposal, hunters could be required to report to a check station for tissue samples to be taken.
