Wyo Points

This is the first year for Wyo applicants to get into the new point system for elk, deer and antelope. It's a bit spendy @ $50 per year per elk point ($40 for deer, $30 for lopes), but getting in on the ground floor has its advantages especially for drawing long odds hunts.

Aps are due by 1/31/2006.

You think that deer and elk are spendy but look at what a sheep oer moose point cost's $75 for moose and more for sheep. I think that they think that it is like the general licence fee like the other states chare for applying and points. Not that6 I like it but it is here so I have to live with it.

Don't worry, you aren't the only one who feels bent over a barrel on this one. I have at least 2 years left of points to gather to draw a bull moose tag. My tag will be at least another $150 more instead of $14 more--that downright smarts!!! I'm still having second thoughts about dropping out of the moose game there--almost $2k for a tag....not sure it's worth it. It could well be a $2k tag in a couple years.

I'm sure there're folks in the wings who'd like to see their odds get better regardless of the cost, but sheeesh....where will it end?

Sure is a good deal for WYGFD. Fot a long draw odds hunt, with like 50:1 draw odds, they will take in over $4000 per tag issued! Points are only O.K. for hunts that have reasonable draw odds. Otherwise, they unfairly lock out newcommers and price gouge everyone. Is it really worth it to worry so much about someone drawing twice before you do? It could easily be you too.

Well I'm glad to be getting in from the very beginning. I'll only be out $70 for Deer & Antelope, but it will be worth it when I draw that Area 47 Antelope tag and my Region K Deer tag

I hear ya on Utah. It's supposed to go up in price though--5 or 6 dollars a point's not too shabby now but who knows what they'll charge. The premium limited entry bull elk tags are $1,500 now. Was it 25% of our non-resident quota are auction tags from this year forward?

There are so many tags they're giving away, I'll be suprised if they can get top $ for them---betcha some will go for $1000 or so. I saw a list and compared to other states, the number of auction tags given out by Utah is outrageous....well over a hundred auction tags across all the limited entry hunts.

Hunting as a non-resident anywhere but our homestate is will eventually be only for the privileged at the rate prices are climbing. I was sure hoping USOs lawsuite would reverse that trend....

A friend of mine is the lone max point holder for moose in WY. He's cashing it in on the 2007 season if that helps.

I understand that Wyoming won't allow nonresidents to hunt National Forest Wilderness land without a guide. Are all the premium deer/elk units located on National Forest Wilderness land? If so, that really adds to the cost of the hunt.

Sent in my $ for points for both elk and deer Tuesday. Always wanted to do a wilderness hunt near Yellowstone so I'll be working towards that. Contacted John Henry Lee outfitters earlier this week, seems pretty knowledgeable and I like what I heard. I told him I would check after this season to see how his hunters did and get some references. If any of you have any feedback regarding his operation, I would appreciate it. The areas he hunts for the wilderness hunts are general areas and it looks like there is just under a 40% chance of drawing a tag. Wyoming has that "special" elk drawing where you spend $400 more bucks to get in a special drawing for 40% of the available tags. Based on what research I have done it doesn't look like I would have to go that route for next year with point and what should be a 75-80% chance of drawing. Any of you got any feedback? Thanks

Wyoming Moose & Goose officials are a little "loosey goosey" with that 40/60 split....there must be some loopholes for those applying with deposits into landowners/outfitters or something 'cause the numbers on the demand indices don't add up for all hunts--maybe it was just a clerical error. There are quite a few hunts out there that are not a pure 40/60 split and I wonder why. But, the good news is that in one instance I can recall it was in favor of the less expensive tag applicants....go figure.

Under the point system odds are you will draw your tag in both the spendy/special draw and the regular draw eventually. Odds are it'll just take more time/points to draw the regular than the special tag. It's all about whether the extra $$ for a greater chance of drawing is worth it to you or not.

Anybody ever get caught in a Wilderness without a guide? I have a friend that has been doing it for years. Not saying it's right, just saying it happens.

Oh, you mean the fella that thought north was south and visa versa on his GPS? Thought he was set to UTM but was in degrees and really was't where he thought he was? ....

Expensive ticket...probably would have to pay for the escorted horse ride out. That or half the backstraps.

Ignore my previous question. I found a map on the Wyoming Game and Fish website that outlines the wilderness area. Looks like there are several premium units that don't require the guide. I guess I better send my application in via overnight!
