I have 6 points built up now. I just don't know where to apply for.

FFTTPOW: I know the feeling. I had 8 points going into this year's draw, and this was the first time I actually put in for an area. I've just been buying points up to now. I looked at the area around the Big Horn Mountains because it is someplace I would like to try and hunt. The draw odds were a little better there also. Thinking perhaps I might try and get a cow tag so I can at least scout the area.

I drew last year with 9 points in a good zone. If im not mistaken you could always put yer first choice for your desired zone/unit, then put yer second choice for cow in the same area. you gain a point if you don't draw and still hunt the area getting real knowledge. You may not like the area after hunting cows for a season and try something different next year. My father drew a cow tag with no points while it took 9 to get a type 1. I got a bull but I would prolly look elsewhere because the whole place is just one giant stand of similar age class pine trees. every other step was over a downed tree in the snow, that was a killer.

Thanks for tip. I'm only at two points, so I guess I have a way to go. WY is a mystery to me still. Guy on TV, Newberg, made it sound like one could draw every other year!

Something to consider regarding WY cow hunts...

If you take a look at the hunt descriptions you will find that while there are cow hunts in the same units as the bull hunts, they usually do not take place in the same part of the unit making it almost useless from a "scouting for bulls" perspective. Take for example the big horns as mentioned above. While the bull hunts are allowed unit wide, the best elk hunting occurs at the higher elevations in and adjacent to the wilderness areas. The cow hunts on the other hand are generally restricted to the low-elevations surrounding agricultural fields and are planned that way to protect the crops. Totally different habitat.
